PHOTO REVIEW: McFarlane Toys Color Tops Titanfall 2 Jester

1jesterUSE

McFarlane’s Color Tops figures started life last year as a mixed blessing. While collectors received awesomely sculpted 7-inch figures from a variety of hot licenses, the trade off was a lack of any useful articulation. That didn’t stop me from buying their first Titanfall 2 Color Tops figure, Pilot Jack Cooper (read my review HERE). Any Titanfall 2 collectible is a good thing in my book, and the dynamic pose McFarlane chose for the Titan Pilot more than made up for his static pose.DSCN5521

Here we are a half year later and McFarlane has rolled out their second wave of Titanfall 2 Color Tops figures. While I can’t vouch for bad guy Blisk, I can say that the robotic Jester is a great improvement for the Color Tops line in terms of cool sculpt AND useful articulation.

Where Jack Cooper represented the main hero you played during Titanfall 2’s solo campaign, Jester is a game character most recognized in multiplayer as a Pilot “Tactical”. Jester comes with Phase Shift, a sort of time rewind game play mechanic. I personally prefer the rapid running benefit of Stim – another robot character class that’s not much different in appearance from Jester. That look is defined by a mono-eyed head, blade legs, fanny jump pack and tons of future military gear. DSCN5512

McFarlane Toys nails these features with a figure sculpt and deco oozing with detail. Unique personalized touches include Jester’s head-dangling animal tails and shoulder kill marks.

For weapons Jester comes armed with a G2A5 semiautomatic battle rifle that fits comfortably in a two-handed firing pose and a SA-3 Mozambique pistol that pegs onto his thigh. Like Jack Cooper, you can have Jester hold his sidearm, however the peg permanently attached to the weapon is unsightly from some angles. (UPDATE: I’ve been informed by a reader that the gun peg DOES come off, and sure enough, it does! Mine was just stuck on there really good.)

A really cool addition to the Jester Color Tops figure is his flight display base with steel rod and removable jump pack exhaust effects. Unfortunately, due to Jester’s spindly legs and odd-shaped feet, this base is required to have him stand. The plus side of all that is the nice array of display poses you can achieve.

Where Jack Cooper was about as stiff as a board (but looking good doing so), Jester features the following articulation: slight ball-jointed shoulders, upper swivel bicep, hinged elbows, swivel wrists, ball-jointed thighs, hinged knees and feet. Alas, there is no head or waist swivel, which is disappointing, though I can see how the sculpt would restrict those. (UPDATE #2: Again, an attentive reader informs me that Jester’s head does rotate. With a little effort of slowly working mine back and fourth, I have gotten my Jester’s head to move.)

I also wish Jester’s display stand was sturdier. While you can achieve some pretty amazing in-flight poses, there is a balancing act in preventing Jester from toppling over. A wider base would have easily solved that problem, but I understand McFarlane’s decision to recycle what was out there.

Aside from those small issues, McFarlane has made some significant Color Tops improvements. According to what we saw at Toy Fair (see our story HERE), collectors can expect even more articulation moving forward, including Old Man Marcus from Gears of War 4 and the Ryder siblings from Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Added articulation or not, I still would have been all over the Titanfall 2 Jester figure. It’s an awesome character design from an equally awesome game. Here’s hoping McFarlane Toys continues to release Titanfall 2 figures. There’s some really cool multiplayer Tactical classes that would look incredible as action figures, such as the characters for Cloak, Pulse Blade and A-Wall.

The Mozambique peg is removable and the head does swivel.

    Otherwise, spot on review.

Hey, you’re right! Mine were seriously locked into place. Head I didn’t want to force in fear of breaking it, but yeah, now that I know I was able to loosen it and bingo. Gun peg same thing. Thanks for the heads up!

        No problem.

We’ve all had a frozen McF or NECA joint or two over the years.

Swap out the base for the NECA flight stand or try some the shorter, old NFL Sportpicks rods and I think you’ll find your enjoyment increases. Base is a lot more stable when the support rod is half the size.
