PHOTO REVIEW: Dark Horse Game of Thrones – Stannis Baratheon

DSCN1595

Dark Horse delivers a one-two punch this month with the release of two new Game of Thrones figures. Hot on the heels of the cool looking, but minor “Son of the Harpy” character (see our review HERE) comes a true Game of Thrones A-Lister: Stannis Baratheon.

Expertly played by Stephen Dillane, Stannis is, err, was the brooding king of House Baratheon. Like practically everyone else on the show, Stannis believed himself to be the rightful ruler of the Iron Throne and sequentially set off to reclaim it.  Stannis was one of those characters you never truly loved or hated, but rather just felt sorry for. Most of the time he was just being manipulated by “The Red Woman,” Melisandre; a lesson to be careful in the company of hot redheads.

A stoic 8-inches tall, Stannis Baratheon is one of Dark Horse’s larger figures. The tragic ruler is captured in mid-stride with a solemn expression on his face. It’s a fitting pose for a character that never once cracked a smile.

Most impressive is Stannis’ outfit: a billowing collection of cape and robes. Cast in a pliable rubber-like plastic, the costume sculpt adds a lot of depth to the figure. From his inner tunic blowing in the wind, to his large cloak shrouding him, Stannis’ struts forward with an air of regal authority.   A drab ensemble of leather, plate and chainmail, Stannis’ attire also speaks of a warrior. A sheathed dagger and long sword proves the point.

25 figures strong, Dark Horse’s  has done an excellent job of delivering every character on the show – big and small. As one of the bigger characters of the series, Stannis Baratheon is a must-have figure for Game of Thrones collectors. Melisandre, a great companion piece to Stannis, is the next figure in the line. And after that? We’ll know more at Toy Fair next month. Stay tuned!

Stannis Baratheon is available to order through many fine retailers, including BigBadToyStore.com and ToyWiz.com priced at around $23.
