Released last year, Blizzard’s team-based multiplayer – Overwatch – has taken the world by storm. While online first-person shooters are nothing new, it is Overwatch’s diverse cast of hero characters that sets it apart from the pack. Covering a broad range of genders and ethnicities, including non-humans, the 24 playable characters in Overwatch make for some great gameplay. They also make for an impressive array of collectibles, and what a better company to make them but the people behind the game!
Designed by Bigshot Toyworks for Blizzard, this new assortment of Overwatch Cute But Deadly Blind Boxed Mini Figures are being distributed in North America via UCC Distributing. The minis retail for about $10 a pop and are just now hitting retail. These are blind boxed figures, so you don’t know who’ll you’ll get until you open it! Many people have had success with using mice for Overwatch as they tend to be very light and easy to handle, but they are not the best in the world.
CUTE BUT DEADLY SERIES 3 (OVERWATCH EDITION)
This is the third assortment of Cute But Deadly vinyl figures from Blizzard, but the first assortment to focus entirely on characters from one game. That’s just how popular Overwatch is. Overwatch was first introduced in Cute But Deadly Series 2 (Tracer, Jackal Pharah, Bastion, and Soldier 76), but Series 3 takes it one step further with variant decos of those four characters, and the introduction of eight all-new ones.
Series 3 includes 13 figures to collect, including:
- Genji
- Reaper
- McCree
- D.Va
- Sombra
- Lucio
- Zarya
- Hanzo
- Bone Soldier 76
- Jackal Pharah
- Sporty Tracer
- Omni Crisis Bastion
- Mystery Chase Figure! (Hint: it’s a Translucent Reaper)
Each case includes 12 figures, which means you’re not gonna get a complete set, a very odd and frustrating move. You’re either going to get all 12 core characters and no chase or 11 core and the chase (which I did, missing D.Va), which means hunting all 13 down is going to be a challenge. Time to assemble some friends to trade with!
Each mini figure stands approximately 3-inches tall and is loaded with adorable detail. These are some very well-designed, high quality vinyl figures! Each character’s expression is to die for (Cute BUT Deadly!). I especially like wide open-mouth grin on Lucio’s face.
Each figure’s sculpt shares a big head, little body chibi styling with poses that range from standing serene, to battle extreme. My favorites are the characters with the expressive, flowing hair/ribbons, such as the ninja-like Genji, bow-toting Hanzo, as well as the spiky bits on Jackal Pharah.
Unique to each character is a clear display base (be sure you don’t throw it away with the foil bag, they are easy to miss!). I say unique because these are not universal display stands. From tiny pin holes for Tracer’s teeny feet to rectangular peg holes for Bastion, each base is designed specifically for each character. I should also note here that each character attaches to their base one way, and one way only.
For example, it may appear that Tracer could fit into her base from either side, however you’ll find that there are raised edges that go up behind her legs to keep her erect. It’ll take you a moment to figure each one out, but once each character is placed properly on their base, they stay on nice and secure.
As listed above, a smokey translucent Reaper is the rare chase figure. And I mean RARE. While I was lucky enough to get him (in place of D.Va), I’ve seen other online case reviews that didn’t. Hunting down rare chase figures is always part of the fun with blind boxed figures, however I don’t think they should take the place of a core character when buying a case. Folks that shell out that kinda cash for a case deserve an entire set.
Regardless of rarity, this is a stellar assortment of mini figures. No matter who you get, each character packs loads of personality and an amazing sculpt. These are actually too nice to be blind boxed. These could easily sell on their own in a window box or on a blister card. Heck, a deluxe box set would be the bee’s knees.
As is, which character you get is in the hand’s of Fate. Happy hunting!
