It’s been a little while since we last checked in with the Star Trek Attack Wing game, but it continues going strong with new expansions arriving regularly and some big things happening this year. 2017 will bring more ships as usual but also new card packs to give you more options with ships you already have, faction packs with multiple ships for a discounted price making it easier than ever to get into the game, and even unpainted ships that you can decorate yourself.
Today we’re going to check out the upcoming batch of single-ship expansions known as Star Trek Attack Wing Wave 30 featuring repaints/redecos of three classic ships: the Romulan I.R.W. Valdore from the film Star Trek Nemesis, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan’s Federation U.S.S. Reliant, and Klingon I.K.S. Koraga from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine! All three of these originally entered the Attack Wing fray in the beginning (the first two in Wave 0 and the latter in Wave 2), and these new packs bring you all of the hard-to-find game materials with fresh coats of paint on the detailed ship miniatures. The trio will be available at your local comic book or game store on May 3rd.
Since the very first wave, all Star Trek Attack Wing expansions have come in the same packaging which you see here. Each single standard-size ship comes in a small clamshell package with the vessel front and center so you can get a really nice look at it. Below the ship is its name and the symbol of its faction, while the back of the package has a description of the craft and a brief rundown of the included components – cards, tokens, and much more. Each ship comes with a maneuver dial and a base with pegs to attach it; the Koraga also includes 14 cards and 35 tokens, the Reliant 15 cards and 18 tokens, and the Valdore 12 cards and 23 tokens.
The U.S.S. Reliant was on a scientific mission when it had the misfortune to discover an energy signature on a planet previously thought lifeless. On the surface the captain and his first officer ran afoul of none other than Khan Noonien Singh, stranded there for nearly twenty years with his fellow augmented humans. Khan would make the vessel his instrument of vengeance against James T. Kirk though the Reliant would ultimately be destroyed in the Mutara Nebula after dueling with the Enterprise. The Miranda-class vessel has a central, saucer-shaped primary hull with underslung warp nacelles and a “roll bar” arcing over the top of the ship that includes a central pod packed with phasers and torpedo launchers. The original Attack Wing Reliant model had a ton of sculpted detail (like the cut lines on the saucer) but was somewhat held back by a flat paint scheme; much of the miniature was a flat pale blue with some nice accents in darker blues and red. This new Wave 30 version looks almost like a new sculpt thanks to its crisp metallic silver paint job with dark blue, red, and yellow details. In addition to being eye-catching this new deco fits in well with the other recent silvery/metallic Federation re-releases.
Among the Reliant expansion’s 15 cards are its maneuver template and two stat cards for using the ship as the U.S.S. Reliant or as a generic Miranda-class starship in your game. Like most Federation ships this one can perform Evasive Maneuvers to avoid taking hits in combat, Target Lock for re-rolling attack dice or performing special attacks, a Scan to reduce the number of dice a target rolls in combat, and Battle Stations to improve dice rolls. The generic Miranda-class ship has a modest Primary Weapon value of 2, a good 2 Agility, 3 Hull, and 2 Shields while the U.S.S. Reliant adds a Shield and boosts the ship’s attack at close range. In addition to a generic Federation captain this expansion comes with a 2 skill Federation Clark Terell who buffs the defense of close by friendly ships and a huge 8 skill Independent Khan Singh who unlocks Elite Talent upgrades, allows cross-faction upgrades on his ship without penalty, and turns Battle Stations dice results into critical hits rather than regular ones!
This set’s upgrades include both Federation and Independent for lots of options and among them are crew member Pavel Chekov who turns white maneuvers green, the Follower of Khan who can be sacrificed to eliminate a crew member on an enemy ship, standard Photon Torpedoes, and the Elite “I Stab at Thee” dealing damage to nearby vessels when your ship is destroyed. There’s a lot of utility in these upgrades that work well in combos, especially on support ships or secondary attackers. Lastly the Reliant comes with the “Mutara Nebula” mission replicating the famous starship battle, pitting two ships against each other in a battlefield with special rules limiting visibility and offering unique abilities.
Among the Klingon Defense Force are many mighty warships, and during the Dominion War one such vessel was the I.K.S. Koraga that patrolled space in the Alpha Quadrant. A K’vort-class Bird of Prey, the Koraga was under the command of Worf when it was ambushed (and subsequently destroyed) by the Jem’Hadar. Thankfully some of the crew were able to survive in escape pods, and the name of the Koraga would live on in song. The Attack Wing ship uses the same sculpt we’ve seen across the line for both K’vort and B’rel versions. Like a menacing raptor the Bird of Prey has a central body, a long forward “neck” that mounts the command structure with bridge and torpedo launcher, and multi-positioning wings that end in powerful disruptor cannons. The miniature has a great sculpt with tons of details including the “feather” patterning on the wings and the complex machinery of the engines and wing mounts. This new version of the ship adds to that a bright green metallic paint with several shades of darker green to mark out different parts as well as bright contrasting red on the engines and bridge module.
The implacable Koraga enters the game with a hefty Primary Weapon value of 4, 1 Agility, 5 Hull, and 3 Shields, though your Cloak option may see you drop them for a boost in defense. The ship can also take Evasive Maneuvers, Target Lock, and Sensor Echo when Cloaked, and its unique special ability gives you an additional defense die when Cloaked! The generic K’vort-class card loses a shield and the special by comparison. Your Klingon captain options with this expansion are the 3 skill Kurn who can take an action to add an attack die in a turn in exchange for taking an Auxiliary Power Token, and 5 skill Worf who can re-roll all blank results once when attacking. Two crew upgrades deal with Battle Stations even though the ship can’t perform that action on its own; every time his ship is damaged Alexander racks up Battle Stations tokens that can be used on the ship once per turn, and N’Garen gives you the option to use an action to turn Battle Stations dice results into all hits and one critical hit when attacking. The Koraga comes with Photon Torpedoes, an Advanced Weapon System Tech upgrade that lets you remain Cloaked when attacking, and the EM Pulse Tech card that weakens a nearby ship’s attack and defense. Packed in this expansion is the “Patrol the Badlands” mission complete with gravitational anomaly and plasma storms you must brave to gather intelligence or prevent the enemy from escaping!
Last up is the I.R.W. Valdore, a cutting-edge Romulan warbird fielded in the late 24th century. In the Nemesis film the Valdore shows up to support the Enterprise-E in its battle against Shinzon’s Reman Scimitar. A sweeping, graceful design, the Valdore-type was a major departure from the previous bulky D’deridex-class warbird. The new ship is roughly bird-shaped and has a long neck and a huge wingspan ending in unique nacelles. As with the Klingon Bird-of-Prey the Valdore has a feather pattern inscribed into its wings, and the Attack Wing miniature replicates that along with all of the other film accurate details. It’s a really cool ship and one of the bigger vessels in the line. The original Valdore came in Wave 0 and featured an overall dark green with some bright green highlights while this new Wave 30 version comes in metallic light green with black accents. It looks great alongside the original as well as the Wave 17 Valdore-type I.R.W. Vrax that gave the same sculpt a translucent green plastic treatment.
The Attack Wing Valdore-class is a monster with a 4 Primary Weapon value, 2 Agility, 6 Hull, and 2 Shields with an action bar containing Evasive Maneuvers, Target Lock, Cloak, and Sensor Echo. The unique I.R.W. Valdore bumps up the Shield value by +1 and adds a special ability that says when the ship makes a green maneuver it gets +1 attack die for the round! There are two named captains in this expansion starting with Tomalak, a classic character from Star Trek: The Next Generation. He is skill 3 and prevents a target ship at Range 3 from gaining its extra defense die. The other is Donatra from Nemesis who is skill 6, adds an Elite Talent upgrade option to her ship, and gives your fleet a potentially huge bonus by granting +1 attack die to each friendly ship within Range 1; for all that she’s still a popular Romulan captain even today. The upgrades in this pack are: All Forward Disruptor Banks Elite Talent adding +1 attack die for an action, Tactical Officer Crew who lets you re-roll your attack dice a second time when spending a Target Lock, and both heavy Plasma and Photon Torpedoes rolling 5 attack dice and giving you other bonuses. Even more than the Koraga the Valdore expansion’s upgrades are ALL about attacking and destroying your opponents, so they’re best used on your primary attacker or single-ship dreadnought fleet. “Destroy the Scimitar” is a three-player mission included with the Valdore. The goal is simple: three fleets must team up to eliminate the Scimitar (represented by a token included in the expansion – or you could use the actual ship if you have it)!
If you’ve been playing Star Trek Attack Wing for years you may already have the original releases of these three ships, but you may still be interested in Wave 30 for the updated metallic paint schemes that look great. And if you are more recent to the game you’ll definitely want to check these out for their three great sculpts, effective ships, and great captain and upgrade options for your fleets. Naturally Klingon and Romulan players will be drawn to the Koraga and Valdore respectively, but remember if you’re an Independent player that the Reliant comes with several cool goodies for you along with the Federation content. Find them all at your local comic book or game store on May 3rd.
