Spider-Man is one of those characters who’s always popular, though currently he’s going through a bit of a renaissance with his own animated series, last year’s appearance in Captain America: Civil War, his upcoming reboot film, tons of comic books, and more. And so, it’s the perfect time for the start of a new ARTFX+ Statue series from Kotobukiya celebrating the webslinger and other characters in his world! The 1/10th scale pre-painted model kits continue Koto’s tradition of great sculpting and paint details in a convenient and affordable size. While there have been a ton of DC ARTFX+ figures produced so far, Marvel has had two main series so far with Avengers and X-Men lineups. Now comes the Amazing Spider-Man, the first entry in the new Marvel Now! wave that will include Spider-Gwen, Miles Morales Spider-Man, Agent Venom, Carnage, and more. Keep reading and check out the photos for a look at this great new statue.
Looking for Spider-Man at your local comic book or specialty store? You’ll find it in a nice, substantial box with lots of dynamic photos and great artwork. As with previous ARTFX+ releases this box has a wallpaper background of classic comic book images in red and black, nicely setting off the graphics. The front panel features a large photo of the actual figure surrounded by the item’s name and logos for Marvel, Kotobukiya, etc. On top you’ll see the Marvel Now! logo, while the sides have a close-up of the statue’s base and the Stefano Caselli artwork on which the statue is based. The back of the box has a wider shot of that art along with some close-ups of the statue. It’s all pretty sleek, focusing on images and not getting bogged down with a lot of text.
Comic book fans know that there are some classic, iconic Spider-Man poses, and this has got to be in the top 3. Peter Parker squats low to the ground (he’s a little under 3.5 inches tall) as though he’s just landed from a big web-swing, and with his left arm behind him for balance points his right hand forward in the web-shooting gesture. Spider-Man is compact and dense, with an athletic physique that’s a refreshing alternative to what we usually see on more musclebound characters like Superman, Hulk, and the like. Of course, the costume is crucial to any representation of the webslinger, and Kotobukiya nailed it here with the classic red and blue. There’s a lot of nice sculpting in the webbing texture, and the colors contrast nicely just as they did in the original comic book appearance. And the dynamic red and blue are offset by the stark white eye lenses and black lines and chest logo. Most ARTFX+ statues come with a simple square, black base with metal on it for the magnetized feet of the figures. I hadn’t realized it until I opened up this package, but Kotobukiya went way beyond that for Spider-Man and included a unique display base, a disc decorated with a classic Spidey logo of white eyes on the black and red web pattern! I think it looks great, and Spider-Man stands on it perfectly. Balance can be a little tricky with the figure’s pose, so also included in the box is a little foot clip to give the statue a bit more ballast. I didn’t find I needed it for my displays but your experience may differ. Either way, Peter looks great standing by himself or on the display disc.
Spider-Man fans, especially those who have been reading for a long time or who love the classic look of the character, should absolutely check out this cool 1/10th scale ARTFX+ statue from Kotobukiya. It’s easy to put together, looks fantastic, and gives you some unexpected options with the display base (I found Spider-Man could stand without it, and with the magnets in his feet you can mount him on any suitably metallic surface or item). The Amazing Spider-Man is hitting store shelves now and can be found for about $55-60 depending on the retailer. Remember too that Peter here is just the first in a new series of Spider-Man related ARTFX+ statues with more to come including Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Carnage, and Agent Venom, so if you’re a really big fan you’ll want to save up so you can collect and display them all. They’re all based off of new artwork by Stefano Caselli and will look seamless together as a group.
