Promotional movie tie-ins are nothing new, but rarely are they as nice as the exciting collaboration between Comicave Studios and RED Enterprise. Exclusive to Alfamart stores in Indonesia (with further distribution being worked on, more on that later), the promotion involves a series of collector Medallions for the first stand-alone Star Wars movie, Rogue One, arriving in theaters December 16th.
Currently underway and running until January 2017, the Rogue One Medallion program is essentially a loyalty campaign. Simply shop at Alfamart and for every Rp. 30.000 spent (Indonesian Rupiah, roughly converted to $2.28 US) you can purchase a blind-bagged medallion for only Rp. 5.000 (almost 40 cents)!
There are 37 Rogue One Medallions to collect in total: 30 “collectible designs” (characters and vehicles), 6 “unique special designs” (action scenes and collages) and 1 super rare gold medallion (K-2SO).
As an added incentive to collect them all (as if you needed one), Alfamart is giving out a Rp. 5.000.000 ($380 US) in-store voucher to those who collect the full set of all 37 coins (that includes the gold K-2SO). Anyone who has the gold medallion can also instantly redeem it for a Rp. 500.000 ($38 US) Alfamart in-store voucher.
To give me a taste of this exclusive program to share with you, RED kindly provided me with a few samples. As mentioned, each collector medallion is blind-bagged. The 30 “collectible designs” and the gold design can be found in the black packaging, while the 6 “unique special designs” can be had in the silver foil packs. While I am sure you’re bound to get duplicates, especially with the 30 “collectible designs,” the color-coded packaging certainly helps in collecting them all.
Once opened, each Rogue One medallion measures 1.5 inches in a diameter. I’m guessing about the size of a half dollar, but since I didn’t have one available, I used a more commonly found quarter as a size comparison. Each medallion is also about as thick as a quarter.
Their meaty weight is the first thing you’ll notice. These are NOT plastic tokens, but real metal coins (stainless iron and electroplated). The second thing to catch your eye is just how polished and shiny each medallion is, along with the amazing etched artwork. These are really good looking, high quality collector coins.
My favorites are the silver-packed “unique special designs,” including the new TIE-Striker, our Rebel heroes and a Stormtrooper helmet set against the tropical planet Scarif, sure to be a big scene in the film. The two “collectible designs” I got include leading lady Jyn Erso and a Red Squadron X-Wing. The back side of every coin reads “Star Wars Rogue One”.

The website also features a forum for medallion collectors to share and trade, along with the opportunity to win prizes. Character-Land has even joined the program with an exclusive Collector’s Medallion Kit (pictured above, about $11 US) that allows you to display your prized collection.
For those outside of Indonesia curious to how they can get these great Rogue One Medallions, there are plans to expand distribution. However, they are unconfirmed at the moment, as negotiations are still taking place, so fans can stay tuned for more news on that.
