Today, guest reviewer CK Lee is examining the San Diego Comic Con exclusive Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Series Gray Iron Man Mk III figure.

    Take it away CK...

This time, for this exclusive SDCC/Silly Thing Gunmetal Grey Iron man, the packaging is very classic looking. The outer layer is painted completely black and it depicts the Iron man chest plate with some texture. The material used for the outer layer is more solid and dense than the normal version. Very similar to a shoebox, when one opens up the cover, Hot Toys make you feel the "exclusivity" of this limited item as it includes soft sponge to wrap the figure instead of the usual molded plastic sleeves. Very classy and collector friendly, all while looking sleek, smooth and sophisticated.

It is almost exactly the same as normal Mk III version, but one can feel the difference in the head material used compared to the normal version. It looks more realistic because the previous one using a more rubber feeling material and this one seems more flesh-like.

Same as the regular/normal Mk III, Hot Toys Iron Man Mark III comes with two pairs of extra hands/gloves. Basically they are used for the light up feature (above). The most important is the chest light effect, which features an on/off switch, which is hidden behind one of the flaps at the back (below). It also comes with a stand, but you can see the name plate is labeled as Exclusive Version (at top).

As mention, the articulation on this version is exactly the same as the normal version. For more information, check out the Iron Man Mk III review HERE.

If one looks closely, the paint on this beauty is actually matte gray pearl and makes this figure slightly heavier than the normal Mk III. Also, it feels smoother and a little colder when one touches the finished piece. Each part has some dark highlights and tones, especially near/at the junctions between armor pieces.

One can see many scratches everywhere on this version of Ironman as its paint application effect makes it looks slightly battle damaged. That said, the head is clean. All of these effects turned out great and this is probably the best paint application of the four different version of Iron man available.

Considering this is Hot Toys first time working with the fashion brand Silly Thing and considering this was only available at San Diego Comic Con in the USA, this figure seems slightly over-priced as it's ranging in the $225 - $250 price range on the secondary market now. Though limited to approx. 500 pieces, it's really unknown how many actually made it to the USA.

Personally, I like the paint application on this version of the Mk III over the other version. It looks heavier and solid; it's just too bad I'm not a fan of designer fashion or brand names.

Depending on how you perceived the value of this figure, one could have expected Hot Toys to add additional unique accessories to this piece (as well as the unique paint app), but they didn't. That said, die-hard fans will want to hunt this limited edition figure down, while fans looking for accuracy versus collectiblity may look to pass it up.

Available now only on the secondary market, one can look to spend at least $225+ for this beauty. Be sure to check out over 35 photos of this impressive figure HERE!

Re: Hot Toys Silly Thing SDCC Gray Iron Man Mk III

Great review! I love the way the way they did the inner packaging. I'm on a self-imposed acquisition ban, but I prefer this color and would have bought it were not for the exclusive price.

    Thanks Jess!
