    NECA Discontinues DJANGO UNCHAINED Figures

Grab 'Em While (If) You Can...

NECA has discontinued their 8-inch DJANGO UNCHAINED action figures (see our story HERE). The controversy surrounding the toy line originated from complaints issued by Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network. The dolls, based on characters from Quentin Tarantino's anti-slavery western film, were deemed offensive and a national boycott was called on them. Several of the figures represent slaves seen in the movie. Naji Ali, director of the civil rights organization Project Islamic Hope, also called for their removal in a news conference: "I actually enjoyed the movie, but we cannot support this type of commercialization."

Weinstein Co., U.S. distributor for the film, responded with this statement: "In light of the reaction to the 'Django Unchained' action figures, we are removing them from distribution. We have tremendous respect for the audience and it was never our intent to offend anyone."

While this turn of events appears a victory for censorship, NECA's Django Unchained action figures ultimately walk away the real winner. Stock of most all these figures has already long sold out. Up for debate is whether the toy line's sell-out success was a result of the popularity of the movie or the controversy leading up to their discontinuation. One thing is very certain, however: the secondary market for these collectibles is now red hot.

Yeah and if you go to YouTube and look at the people totally freaking out over this movie, most of them have not even bothered to actually see it or the figs and some haven't even got the title right ("Django in Chains" ).

There's a lot of misinformation swirling around that the movie and the toys are a "glorification" of slavery (one dude was trying to claim the Django figure came with chains on and the white figs came with whips, which is just NOT true)

If they took the time to actually see the movie, they'd find out it's a story of a badass slave hero who liberates himself and then goes back to rescue his lady.

Chock 1 up for the victory of blind, uninformed ignorance and hype.
