REVIEW: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Dimension X

Our Heroes In A Half Shell Take To Space!...

"The fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, and it's up to the Turtles to save the world with help from their new ally, the Fugitoid. Suit-up and soar into space with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."


The turtles are back and are their popularity is sky high. And if the sky's the limit, these heroes in a half shelf are taking it up to space in a new batch of figures from Playmates Toys called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Dimension X. In this story that kicks of Season 4, the four turtles: Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael team up with Fugitoid, a scientist brain stuck inside a cyborg's body, who supplies space suits and weapons. With his help, the Turtles track down the Triceratons to save planet Earth.

We'll take a look at seven figures in this review, the four main Turtles in Space Suits, Fugitoid, and the two Wal-Mart exclusive figures: Mozar, leader of the Triceraton Army and Lord Dregg, Ruler of Planet Sectoid.

The packaging of the turtles are essentially the same as it has been, standard card and bubble, but sports unique artwork for Dimension X. Each of the turtles have their own character art sporting the front of the packaging while Fugitoid, Lord Dregg and Mozar have all four turtles on theirs. Accessories are properly held in place in the tray if they have any.

The back of the card has a Clip & Connect bio for kids to save and if I had to make a nitpick, it would be the odd shape of these bios. If kids were to cut these out, it would be an oddly shaped stack of bios. Still, it's nicer to have it than a generic card any day.

The sculpting on the figures are all fun and match the cartoon well enough, but due to the nature of their space suits, the turtles suffer a bit from small heads, but it's not terribly noticeable. Each of the turtles have unique head sculpts reflective of their personalities. The base turtles appear to be the Battle Shell Turtles, with an opening storage shell.

Each of the turtles comes with their own space gear that snaps into place. The belts here are colored dependent on which turtle it belongs to, but I wish they kept them white to match the space suit (and it's more toon accurate it that way). The colored belts really distract from the overall look, which is a bit of a shame. And while all of the armor and belts are removable to make plain turtles, my belts were on pretty tight so I didn't want to break them.

The space armor consists of helmet, leg guards, arm guards, and fist claws. Everything snaps into place and does a decent job staying on, but are prone to fall off with heavy play. Each turtle also has a space version of their signature weapon in a translucent plastic.

Articulation wise, these turtles have a pretty decent amount for a figure in the $9 range. Of course you get the neck, ball joint shoulders, elbows, wrist, legs, and knees. Articulation with the space gear on is more limited of course.

Fugitoid, the scientist stuck in the body of an android, is the scrawny white robot and looks pretty close to the cartoon in sculpt but paint-wise, doesn't quite look like his toon counterpart. The black goggles should be white and I don't recall a yellow marking on his ribs. It's always interesting to see how the toys and the cartoons can be so different in color appearance.

Fugitoid has an articulated neck, ball joint shoulders and ball joint legs. He also has swivels in his wrists and his boots to change it up, but most notable are his legs and arms are made with a slightly bendy flexible material but it's not the easiest to pose. Unfortunately Fugitoid doesn't come with any accessories.

Mozar the Triceraton, exclusive to Wal-Mart through 2015, is a really neat looking figure. The head sculpt has a lot more detail that we're used to seeing in the turtle figures generally. His body suit has a nice texture to it as well. Articulation wise, Mozar has ball jointed shoulders, and thighs, wrists and waist swivel and of course the neck. Mozar has a bonus tail joint that also can swivel but again, no weapons. The vintage Triceraton had a blaster but Mozar has nothing.

Lord Dregg, also exclusive to Wal-Mart through 2015, is one crazy looking baddie! The evil ruler of Planet Sectoid has humongous arms and extra arms, setting him aside from the pack. The sculpt is very spider-inspired, but an interesting purple with pink and red tones that work well. Dregg has wings, but unfortunately they're not separated.

Dregg has some articulation, including neck, and ball jointed shoulders. His smaller arms can move around and he has ball jointed legs but nothing much in the legs and arms. His tail can be moved but due to his wings, there's not much room to move about.

Lord Dregg, just like Fugitoid and Mozar has absolutely no accessories. He is a bigger figure but there should be at least something for him defeat the turtles with.

Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Dimension X figures are available now, but Mozar and Lord Dregg are Wal-Mart exclusives until the remainder of the year. If you're a big fan of the show, these figures do belong in your collection. Target also has a chromed out set of the turtles and Fugitoid if you're looking for shinier turtles.

These figures all retail for about $8.99 each which actually seems like a great deal for the size of the figure.
