PHOTO REVIEW: Hot Toys Kerberos Panzer Jäger - PROTECT GEAR (AC02)

Hot Toys' Artist Collection Raises the Bar Even Higher...

Following their stunning Samurai Predator, Hot Toys releases the second 1:6th scale figure in their Artist Collection: Kerberos Panzer Jäger. Featuring a soldier donning "Protect Gear" armor, a look influenced by WWII German military, the figure was a collaboration between legendary artist Mr. Takayuki Takeya and Hot Toys' JC. Hong.

Hot Toys has long established their 1:6th scale work as some of the best in the industry. Hot Toys' Artist Collection raises that bar even higher. The love put into this figure is evident from the moment you receive the huge packaging, a gorgeously illustrated shoe-box presentation. Everything about this figure shows Hot Toys' utmost respect for the property, from the wide array of accessories, to the jaw-dropping sculpted display base.

Two head sculpts are provided, one featuring a hyper-realistic portrait and the other a layered affair consisting of masked head, rebreather and helmet. Not only does the masked head include a deluxe light-up feature, but both head sculpts swap and articulate at the neck via powerful magnets - a Hot Toys first.

Accessories are equally impressive. The backpack features a real metal frame that holds ammo and radio boxes all via straps that are individually fastened. The large machine gun includes a working ammo receiver and bi-pod, while the pistol is a complex modular design where the "wooden" butt also plays double duty as a storage device that in turns slides into the figure's plastic gun holster.

An accessory I wish every Hot Toys figure came with is the inclusion of a sculpted display base. The Protect Gear's sculpted base is particularly nice, featuring the helmet and mask of a fallen soldier, along with spent shell casings, rubble and bullet-ridden wall. Magnets once again come into play, the figure's feet locking securely onto the base for a more realistic display. In case collectors prefer the standard crotch-hugging stand, one is also included with a themed name plate.

Kerberos Saga fans will find a lot to like about this figure. The Protect Gear armor is certainly more detailed and ornate than previous figures, such as the more classic release pictured below from Medicom. Hot Toy's version is certainly a more artistic interpretation of the design (thus Artist Collection), something die-hard fans may or may not appreciate. Like fine art, it's all a matter of personal taste. Regardless, there is no denying the craftsmanship involved with this figure. This is Hot Toys bringing their A game, and then some. If only all Hot Toys figure releases were so devine.

The Protect Gear action figure is in-stock and ready to ship through Hot Toy's U.S. distributor, Sideshow Collectibles. The figure is priced at $314.99 with a payment plan available.
