REVIEW: Hot Toys Captain America: The Winter Soldier - WINTER SOLDIER (MMS241)

Captain America's Childhood Hero Turned Villain...

Review and Photography by David Yeh

Released late last year from Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier was The Winter Soldier himself, a surprisingly great release from Hot Toys. If a hero is supposed to keep his friends close and his enemies closer, then Winter Soldier is as close as they’ll come as actor Sebastian Stan portrays Bucky Barnes, Captain America’s childhood hero turned villain. The sixth scale figure comes with two portraits, making collectors choose between three different looks, pushing this price tag to a cool $240.

The packaging shows a production still of Sebastian Stan as The Winter Soldier, a large red Soviet star behind him and the crew of Hot Toys on the back. The box is sturdy, keeping contents safe for the most part. Inside is an insert sleeve with a photo of the Hot Toys Winter Soldier and below that, multi-layers of trays containing the figure, accessories, and display stand. There are no twist ties but there is tape and plastic wrapped around the hands and feet. Sometimes I’m lucky to pull them right off but sometimes they’re a real pain.

Two portraits for The Winter Soldier and three possible looks. For starters, the unmasked head is how we see Bucky later in the film. The second portrait is Winter Soldier with a mask. A separate goggles piece plugs into the side of his face but before you do that you’ll remove his hair piece to do so. Connecting via magnet, the hair sits on his head tightly enough.

The paint on these portraits are pretty good, but there should be more makeup around the eyes on the masked portrait. As it is now, it’s just a little too clean. Still, it’s great to see some options in your display. As cool as he is with the mask, I’ll most likely display him without.

The body underneath has more than 30 points of articulation and you shouldn’t have too much trouble posing him in various positions. The left arm seems to have a little bit extra slack since it’s not bound down by any clothing. The metal arm does sag a bit more though if you’re not careful.

Winter Soldier comes with four pairs of interchangeable palms and one extra open palm. One pair of fists, one pair of relaxed palms, one pair for holding weapons, and another pair of open palms. There is one bonus hand included that was taped to the inner box. I do wish there was a left palm that could hold one of his daggers, but unfortunately that is not the case.

In addition to the hands, he comes with a slew of weapons to use on his opponents. There is one machine gun, one remote bomb launcher, one submachine gun, three pistols, two daggers, two grenades, and one spike with sheath.

A lot of the weapons can be placed all over Winter Soldier’s armor in specially designed places. Some holders work really well but one holster on his left leg won’t hold the pistol at all, popping right off. They’ll stay on okay for the other areas but one tap and you might lose 'em. Definitely a figure for display and not so much handling.

The Winter Soldier is another great release from Hot Toys and a perfect addition for any one who loves the film. It’s $240 but comes with a lot of weapons to tie you over.
