ADVANCE LOOK: WizKids Marvel Comics HeroClix 2015 Convention Exclusive Spider-Ham

Long-Awaited Peter Porker Makes His HeroClix Debut Starting At U.S. Nationals...

Welcome back, HeroClix players, to our ongoing coverage of this year’s Convention Exclusive figures coming to you at major events from WizKids! In this series we’re giving you exclusive first looks at some of these awesome prize figures on their way at major sanctioned tournaments starting with U.S. Nationals coming up the weekend of April 11-12 in Glen Burnie, MD. Last week things got really interesting with DC Comics’ The Weird (see our reveal HERE), and this time we’re going to swing to Marvel HeroClix with a character whom the fans have been wanting for a very long time. Move over Mr. Parker, because Peter Porker is here with the 2015 Limited Edition prize figure of Spider-Ham!

A classic in-house parody of Spider-Man, Spider-Ham was created by Tom DeFalco and Mark Armstrong in 1983’s Marvel Tails #1. A porcine superhero modeled after Peter Parker, Porker began life as an ordinary spider but was transformed when (true story) the scientist May Porker bit him after blasting herself with her experimental “atomic powered hairdryer.” I’m not making this up, folks. Spider-Ham has all of the same powers as his more famous counterpart (as well as self-built web shooters) and a similar sense of responsibility as well as humor. His adventures would bring him into contact with all sorts of other anthropomorphic parody animals and there was even a version of him in the Ultimate universe!

There’s often a somewhat silly character in WizKids’ prize offerings, and it’s pretty obvious at first glance that Spider-Ham is it this time around. The figure captures the cartoony look and proportions of the character perfectly with Porker vaulting over a fire hydrant on his way to combat Ducktor Doom or Doctor Octo*****cat. The diminutive hero is a bit chubby with oversized feet and hands, and his head is positively enormous. Spider-Ham wears a costume based on Spider-Man’s original blue and red duds down to the white eyes and spider symbol on the chest. Porker’s is distinguished from Parker’s by a unique Spider-Ham logo on the back, twin antennae, and an additional Spider-Man symbol on his snout. The pose is fun, there are some really nice sculpted details like the web pattern on his costume, and the colors and bold and bright.

The spectacular Spider-Ham HeroClix figure is a build-friendly 99 points with the Spider-Man(Ham?) team ability and a trait with elements familiar to HeroClix players giving him Leap/Climb and Super Senses that succeeds on 4-6. Porker’s stats are about on par with other recent Spider-Man figures of a similar point cost with decent speed, strong attack and defense values, and moderate damage on his 6 click dial. Spider-Ham begins the game with the powerful combination of Charge and Super Strength to deal big damage, and mid-dial he swaps out those for a special movement power giving him Flurry and Willpower. His 18 starting defense is protected by his traited Super Senses, and mid-dial the anthropomorphic hero doubles up with Combat Reflexes. On clicks 1 and 4 are also a special power giving him yet another layer of protection with Shape Change and Perplex that can’t target himself. In between those clicks is some Perplex, and Spider-Ham finishes out his dial with Outwit (nicely paired with his 2 damage Flurry/Willpower clicks). While Porker has a lot of solid powers and fun special powers he differs from a lot of recent Spider-Man figures in that he has no range other than the minimums for his Perplex and Outwit. Lastly, make sure to check out his card for the great flavor descriptions of his powers featuring the cast of characters from his unique animal universe!

Looking to put Spider-Ham on your HeroClix team? As always you’re going to want to start with his keywords. Like his human counterpart Porker has the usual Reporter, Scientist, and recently added Spider-Man Family, all of which have tons of useful figures for allies. Look to the previous Deadpool and Amazing Spider-Man sets especially, and if playing Family don’t forget the ATA so Spider-Ham can copy the team abilities of opposing characters. Lastly, and fairly obviously, Porker has the Animal keyword. Although you won’t find figures of his world’s Captain Americat, Hulk-Bunny, Deerdevil, etc., you can use this keyword to field him with other animalistic heroes like Wolfsbane, Rocket Raccoon, Werewolf by Night, Squirrel Girl, and many others.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this reveal of the WizKids Marvel HeroClix 2015 Convention Exclusive Spider-Ham! This fun and highly playable anthropomorphic hero will be available in major tournaments this season starting with U.S. Nationals in Glen Burnie, MD the weekend of April 11-12. Get all the information on this event at the WizKids U.S. Nationals page HERE.

Also, be sure to check out the rest of the 2015 Convention Exclusive figures (DC’s Animal Man, Adam Strange, The Weird, Brainiac’s Skull Ship, and Felix Faust with d20 plus Marvel’s Loki Agent of Asgard, Ghost Rider, Kree Supreme Intelligence, and Doctor Strange with d20) in WizKids’ big announcement HERE.
