REVIEW: Hot Toys Monsters University MIKE & SULLEY Vinyl Figures

    From Pixar to Plastic...

The company that brings you the finest in sixth scale figures is also delivering popular vinyl toys as well. From Disney-Pixar’s hit film last year, Monsters University, Hot Toys has created the lead stars Mike and Sulley in a vinyl collectible set.

Two different sets are available: the one reviewed here is the standard version but there’s also a version of Mike & Sulley sporting their Monsters University jackets and accompanied by Archie the Scare Pig, Fear Tech’s mascot. The standard set is priced at $129.99, where the jacketed version is $20 more.

The figures are packaged within a plastic tray in a standard window box. The school logo graces the sides while a computer-generated image is on the back. Missing are names of the sculptors and artists who worked on the piece.

Sculpting is never a concern with Hot Toys and the vinyl duo are pretty spot on to their on-screen counterparts. Sulley (the big one) is literally sculpted head to toe in fur, which isn’t an easy task. Despite Sulley being a larger figurine without articulation, you can see the seams of where he’s put together in the arms, wrists, and neck.

Although Mike & Sulley are separate figures, Sulley is posed in such a way that you can’t really pose him by himself - forever leaning on his buddy Mike. I suppose it could work if you can find another object for him to lean on.

Mike, on the other hand is in a more neutral stance, albeit standing on a stack of books. I’m unsure if he’s meant to be removed from the book base but I’m having trouble removing Mike from it so I’ll just leave it be. Mike’s smile reveals braces on his upper teeth so as not to confuse him with the older Mike.

Mike & Sulley are painted well, with clean lines and no sign of mistakes anywhere. Their eyes are painted with a glossier tone to reflect light, making them more lifelike. But while we’re on the eyes, one thing is for certain, these eyes are what you would expect from cheaper made toys. It’s certainly more apparent on Mike, as his dark green eyes show a real lack of detail that even smaller figures have.

The great detail in this set are in the stack of books Mike is standing on. Each book has its own unique title and smaller details that anyone can appreciate but most likely librarians.

While this duo is a bit pricey, I can’t help but love how it looks on display. This set is perfect for the Monsters University or even the Monsters Inc. fan.
