3-D Printer Maker Gets Into Collectibles...

The Associated Press reports that 3D Systems has purchased Gentle Giant Studios, which provides 3D modeling for the entertainment and toy industries.

Gentle Giant, based in Burbank, Calif., has led the development of state-of-the-art content using 3D scanning and modeling to develop and make licensed 3D printed characters, toys and collectibles from a variety of franchise properties including Marvel, Disney, AMC's The Walking Dead, Avatar, Harry Potter and Star Wars.

Last month 3D Systems, which makes 3-D printers, announced that it would acquire part of Xerox Corp.'s product design, engineering and chemistry group for $32.5 million in cash in order to expand its business.

3DS plans to immediately leverage Gentle Giant Studios technology and vast library of digital content into its consumer platform and extend its existing brand relationships to further the reach of 3D scanning, modeling and printing for entertainment, toys, collectibles, action figures in conjunction with numerous blockbuster films and evergreen licensed properties.

EDITOR'S NOTE: From a toy collecting perspective, it's all business as usual. Gentle Giant, in addition to creating their own product, has been helping numerous other companies create toys with their 3D scanning technology for some time. With 3DS now at the helm, that practice will only continue.
