Mattel has kicked off 2011 with their latest Masters of the Universe Classics monthly figure Vikor. Based on the original concept art for He-Man, this figure is a hybrid between a Viking and Conan. Originally scheduled for a February release, Vikor was slotted in for January due to some last-minute logistical delays with Bow. Vikor is a significantly different figure among the previously released MOTUC figures as he does not feature the same furry underwear as the vast majority of all Eternia’s inhabitants wear.

The new Vikor figure features a lot of new tooling specifically sculpted for the character, such as his removable fur pelt with ornate collar, barbarian sword, pointed shield, battle axe, loin cloth (with sword sheath on the back), new wrist cuffs with metal chains and brand new head sculpt with long hair and Viking helmet. Vikor is also the first MOTUC figure to feature hidden ankle joint pegs and Mattel has stated that all upcoming figures will be fabricated this way from now on.

The paint apps on my particular Vikor figure were a bit sloppy as there was black paint rub-off behind his neck and some random dots on his torso. These paint imperfections are most likely to be scarce in production and it seems that the issues may have been caused by not allowing the paint to dry completely before placing it in the package.

The articulation on Vikor is a lot better due to the fact that the soft loin cloth allows a wider range of motion for the crotch joints when placing the figure in crouching positions. The joints are all nice and tight throughout the body and all weapons and accessories work great with the figure overall. It definitely seems that Mattel is stepping up the QC with their MOTUC figures as evident in several aspects of this figure and I can’t wait to see what reveals they have in store for Toy Fair next week!

If you’re a Club Eternia subscriber, February will be abundantly fruitful for you with the release of the Shadow Beast, Bow and Preternia Disguise He-Man and Etneria Map shipping all at once to your doorstep in less than 2 weeks. For those who do not have a subscription, you can head over to mattycollector.com on February 15th to purchase these along with a re-release of Tytus and Keldor.

Stay tuned to Figures.com next week for all the latest Mattel news and images direct from New York Toy Fair 2011.
