The award-winning original television series Avatar: The Last Airbender first aired in February 2005 on the Nickelodeon networks. The action-packed show pulled from a variety of influences, cultures, and religions to tell the tale of Aang, an Airbender (with the power to control wind) who is destined to become the Avatar, learning the powers of the other elemental tribes, the Waterbenders, Earthbenders, and Firebenders, to unite the nations and bring peace to the world.

The new Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Complete Book 1 Collector's Edition DVD set collects the first season and first twenty episodes of the series on five discs with two discs of extra bonus features. The episodes in the first "book" deal with Aang's awakening and the introduction of many of the primary characters including siblings Katara and Sokka of the Southern Water tribe, and Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation. Aang and his friends journey to the North to find the other Waterbenders so that they may help him learn the first of the three skills he needs to become the Avatar, all the while trying to outrun Zuko who is constantly trying to capture him in a quest to restore his honor.

The special features included in the set are sure to excite fans of the show offering an inside look into the making of this beautiful animated adventure. Features include a Behind-the-Scenes with the Avatar Cast & Crew, the original Avatar Pilot Episode with Audio Commentary, and two "The Making of Avatar" featurettes including Inside the Sound Studios and Inside the Korean Animation Studios. Included on the separate bonus disc is the most exciting of the features: the Avatar Documentary. This 30-documentary sit-down with the show’s creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko and talks about their journey in creating the show and the impact it’s had on the fans.

The set also includes a full-color booklet that is a preview edition of the the full-length book Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Art of the Animated Series that explores the the art of the show through character design, background paintings, and storyboards.

This new collector set offers a couple new things for the fans of the show, but is essentially the same Book 1 set that was previously released in fancy new packaging, and really doesn't offer anything worth a double-dip. But new fans (like myself) are sure to enjoy the added bonues. The Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Complete Book 1 Collector's Edition is available now on DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment.
