New Venture Empowers Independent My Little Pony Artists & Collectors...
It's no great secret that My Little Pony is one of the most popular brands in the world right now, capturing the imagination of kids, parents, grown men, and more. What was surprising, though, was the small display case in the Hasbro San Diego Comic-Con 2014 booth devoted to a new venture called SuperFanArt.com. Put simply, "SFA" is a collaboration between Hasbro, the custom 3D printing company Shapeways, and My Little Pony digital artists around the world. Hasbro is officially sanctioning the creation of My Little Pony 3D figures and artwork to be sold through Shapeways. Take a minute and read that last sentence again; it's pretty revolutionary. In the short term it means fans and collectors can get high quality, customized products online. In the longer view, it means more support for independent artists, a growing understanding of third party creators and what collectors want by Hasbro, and the possibility of more licenses opening up to fan creations. Might we one day see Star Wars or Transformers added to this list? Who knows, but it sure is exciting!
