REVIEW: Playmates TMNT Half-Shell Heroes: Blast to the Past

Back in Time for the Ultimate Rumble in the Jungle! ...

The Turtles are teaming up with their prehistoric pals in a new line-up of Half-Shell Heroes by Playmates Toys. These assorted two packs contain one of your favorite Ninja Turtles and a dino buddy, as seen in the Nickelodeon TV Special Half-Shell Heroes: Blast to the Past. Of course we all know that the turtles are inseparable, but we're only looking at two of these in this review: Mikey & Brachiosaurus and Raph & Pteranodon. You can also look for Leo & Triceratops and Donnie & T-Rex. Each 2-pack is available in stores now and for $6.99.

The packaging for each set is much like a card and bubble, but without the bubble. The figures are displayed in an open packaging which means you can get a much better look at the figures you're buying, but it also means you don't know how many other people have been touching your toys prior to taking them home. This box also isn't any easier to open, proving to actually be more difficult. If that's to prevent thefts, I bet it's working.

The turtles and their dinosaur pets are all nicely sculpted, cute and fun. Mikey is a smaller turtle overall (compared with Raph) and his head looks especially small, considering that he's wearing the head of another dead animal on top of his head. Mikey's nunchucks are unfortunately sculpted to his hands, which is fine for a kids toy but aesthetically it's not very pleasing since you really can't put them to use.

Mikey's Brachiosaurus is a decent size dino and sports some orange markings. His four legs are moveable but a bit limited in what they can do.

Raph is sporting a tank top here but in general looks pretty solid. There's no funny helmet going on here. His weapons are also sculpted into his hands but the sais work so much better. Ralph's Pteranodon is actually a highlight as he's also wearing a red mask... or just has the markings in the right place. The Pteranodon has an articulated neck and legs.

Both Mikey and Raph have joints in the arms, legs, and neck, much like the other Half-Shell Heroes. Also, if you move one arm or leg up, the other arm or leg will go with it.

Overall, these turtle packs are fun and great for the kids, especially if they have seen the TV special. But they're dinosaurs and who doesn't like dinos? Find these packs wherever turtles are sold.
