"All Toy Lines Must End"...

MattyCollector has posted the above image on their facebook page, an ominous message stating that "All Toy Lines Must End" followed by "The Final Year, 6-27, 9am". Sure sounds to me like Masters of the Universe Classics will be coming to an end next year, something Mattel has stated would be happening in the next year or two due to dwindling interest, and lets face it, dwindling range of popular characters to produce. It's been a long, strong run! Stay tuned for more details on June 27...

That's ridiculous!

The folks over at He-man.org just finished holding a poll of characters still left to be made after 2015 and there were dozens and dozens of worthy choices.

If there is "dwindling interest", it is due to the way that Mattel handles the line by not re-releasing core characters at regular intervals, making it prohibitively expensive for any new collectors to jump in at a later point unless they are willing to pay crazy scalper prices.

I think they should consider moving forward beyond 2015 by both re-issuing the early core character figures and continuing to produce long fan-demanded characters that have never been seen in plastic form before.

But another issue seems to be the rising cost of plastic, which they seem to feel will make the line financially unviable beyond 2015. To address this issue, I think they should move to a kind of Kickstarter-type model, in which only figures that achieve a certain level of guaranteed financial backing will get made. Or they could turn things over to small-time producer "third parties" who are willing to work on very small scale production to satisfy the hardcore MOTU fan demand.

I state "dwindling interest" based on the fact that the 2014 MOTUC subscription almost didn't go through: https://www.figures.com/forums/news/36832-motu-dcu-lines-danger-cancellation.html

But yes, there are many reasons as to why. I'm sure Mattel will fill us in this Friday.
