Following hot on the heels of the release of Guillermo del Toro' epic giant robots versus giant monsters motion picture, NECA had on display at San Diego Comic-Con new collectibles in their Pacific Rim line. As announced before the show, the 7-inch scale Pacific Rim Series 2 action figures, due out in stores this October, will consist of Australian Jaeger Striker Eureka, the USA's Gipsy Danger - this time Battle Damaged and packing wrist chainblades, and a new Kaiju for them to battle: the ape-like Leatherback. Shown was the previously revealed Striker Eureka and the debut of Leatherback. As you can see from the photo above, the new Kaiju dwarves the other figure in mass. While the Battle Damaged Gipsy Danger was not on display, NECA's Head of Product Development Randy Falk explained that the battle damage is pretty cool looking, but not super severe, like the Jaeger missing an arm. Gipsy will have both arms and will come packing his wrist blades. Randy explained that IF Series 2 performs well (sales of Series 1 were excellent) that a Series 3 would be produced and that Russia's Cherno Alpha would most certainly be released in that wave. Seeing that a potential Series 3 wouldn't see release until 2014 at the earliest, the other two characters haven't been decided yet. There's the potential for more Kaiju in toy form, but Randy explained that most are so large in the movie (such as Slattern) that making them into in-scale 7-inch action figures would prove difficult.

Speaking of large Kaiju, a massive prototype of Knifehead lurked over NECA's booth. Randy explained that they are still figuring out how to release the big fella, but is working it out so hopefully fans have something for their 18" Gipsy Danger to fight later on.

The 18" Gipsy Danger also made his debut at Comic-Con in fully painted prototype form, the hero Jaeger loaded with super cool detail not seen on the smaller scale figure. Slated for release in August priced at $84.99, this jumbo toy will also feature intricate paint detail to replicate all the battle damage and wear and tear seen on screen as well as lights on the chest and head. The over 8″ long chain-sword weapon attaches at the forearms and can be wielded on the right or left side.

I wish someone other than neca grabbed this license. Neca makes excellent figures but their habit of releasing a "series" consisting one 1/3 figures sucks. I understand playing cautious, but they screwed up here. Suffice to say I and many others are very disappointed that we wont have figures of all the kaiju and mechs from this film anytime soon.
