San Diego Comic-Con is no longer just a place to get the latest and greatest toy exclusives, it’s now a place to get your 80's animation fix as well. Mill Creek Entertainment provided He-Fans the opportunity to pick up a limited edition HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE – THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON on DVD at the FUNimation booth for only $25. The Limited Edition set features exclusive artwork on a collectible holographic foil packaging and made available nearly 60 days prior to the regular DVD release.

The original animated series is represented here in all of its 65 episode glory on 8-DVDs in story continuity order which may vary from the original production and broadcast order. There are SIX full-episode commentary tracks by Lou & Erika Scheimer, Larry DiTillio, Tom Sito, Tom Tataranowicz and Dave Teague throughout the first seven discs on the following episodes: “The Cat and the Spider”, “Trouble in Trolla”, “The Rainbow Warrior”, “The Greatest Show on Eternia”, “Bargain With Evil”, “The Problem With Power”.

The eighth disc contains special features including:

-10 complete episode scripts: “The Cat and the Spider”, “To Save Skeletor”, “ Into the Abyss”, “The Rainbow Warrior”, “Battlecat”, Hunt for He-Man”, “Not So Blind”, “The Secret of Grayskull”, “Teela’s Triumph”, and “The Problem with Power”

-50 Detailed Profiles of various Characters, Creatures, and Artifacts. A great resource for those looking for something or someone in a pinch.

-The Stories of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Season 2 – Creators reveal inside secrets and stories about the making of the episodes in this fun documentary.

-The Magic of Filmmation – Documentary retracing the history of Filmation and the legacy that it left upon the entertainment industry.

-Animating He-Man and the Masters of the Universe – Documentary about bringing the toon to life, from script to storyboard and voice recording to directing and animation.

The visual quality and sound of this set is pretty remarkable for a cartoon series from the 80's and seeing it again really brings back fond memories of my youth. These cartoons have an innocence and cheesiness that cannot be recreated and are a joy to revisit.

If I had to have one complaint about this set it would be regarding the eight individual black sleeves the set is contained in. Getting to disc 5 requires you to remove the first four discs in order to get to it. Putting them back requires the same dedication so I would have certainly preferred a different method of storgae and retrieval.

But all in all, it’s a real treat to be able to see the complete second season the way Mill Creek has delivered it. You can “Play All” and sit back and enjoy. More chapter stops would certainly be useful (especially to avoid opening and end credits) but as is, there really isn’t anything else bad to say. The documentaries are a great resource to see just how influential the cartoon was and worth checking out on their own merit.

HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE - THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON is a necessary addition to anyone’s library who still believe that they “have the power”.

So are these same documentaries included on the earlier DVD releases of this series or were they newly made for Mill Creek's release?

Why should Heman fanatics who would have already bought the entire series when it came out like a decade ago get all excited over the prospect of buying the same thing again? I don't don't get the hype over this release.
