Ever since the Machete mock trailer was played during the intermission portion of the Grindhouse films in 2007, audiences have been eagerly awaiting a feature-length film of the cold-blooded Mexican anti-hero played by Danny Trejo. Three years later director Robert Rodriguez has fulfilled fans wishes with the recent theatrical release of the action-packed Mexploitation film and now fans can own their very own action figure of the blade-wielding Machete courtesy of NECA.

PACKAGING: The latest movie-based figure from NECA is packaged in the same tradition of the current clamshell design that was first introduced with the Player Select collection. The clamshell features a double-sides full color insert with a very cool retro-styled movie poster in the back utilizing an image of the action figure. The front of the insert features artwork from the Machete film including the original film logo.

SCULPT/ACCESORIES: NECA has done a fantastic job at capturing the likeness of actor Danny Trejo in his portrayal of the deadly Machete. The facial sculpt although great, looks better from certain angles than others. Machete is captured in a ruthless blade-wielding pose with his long black hair waving wildly in the wind. The detail of Machete’s knife-toting leather vest is truly amazing and at first glance looks as if the sculpted knives are removable but unfortunately they are not. Machete also includes two machete blades of varying lengths which can be easily placed in the figure’s hands.

PAINT: The paint application on the figure is surprisingly clean with barely any flaws visible to the naked eye. The flesh tone color used on Machete makes the figure stand out significantly in its clamshell package among other action figures at retail. The two machete accessories are painted extremely well considering their size and feature blood spatter details which look great. The superior detailed paint job on the figure breathes life into the figure as is customary on most NECA action figures these days.

ARTICULATION: While NECA has created several extensively articulated action figures in the past couple of years, Machete is quite the departure from that. It seems that this figure was originally intended for release in conjunction with the Grindhouse DVD release but was held back for the feature film instead. Perhaps this is why the figure features such minimal articulated joints. The figure tends to focus more on the sculpt and less on the posing options. While the articulated joints on this figure are minimal, it still offers a few poseable alternatives.
Machete features the following articulated joints:
- Ball-Socket Head
- Ball-Socket Shoulders
- Ball-Socket Wrists
- Ball-Socket Waist
- Swivel Ankles

OVERALL: While I would have preferred a less dynamic pose and more articulation on this figure, the end product is still nothing short of impressive. NECA has done a fantastic job immortalizing Machete in plastic and it is equally great to finally have a Danny Trejo action figure you can add to your collection. Whether you are a fan of the Grindhouse films, Machete or just love seeing Danny’s films, this is one action figure you wont want to miss out on. Machete retails for approximately $14 and is available for purchase through many of our fine sponsors.
