Big changes are in store for Color Tops, the 7-inch licensed figure line from McFarlane Toys. The series, which got it’s name from color coded waves (red, blue, green, etc.), will now see new licensed packaging. While the color in Color Tops will be replaced with easier to identify branding, the numbered figures will continue.
This redesign was shown front and center with McFarlane’s newest license: Jim Henson’s Labyrinth. David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King was on display, the figure arriving Holiday 2017 priced at a SRP of $19.99.
The other big Color Tops change is the inclusion of useful articulation. Yes collectors, McFarlane heard your complaints load and clear. Starting with old man Marcus Fenix from Gears of War 4 (which also shows off the new licensed packaging), each 7-inch figure will receive up to 17 points of articulation. I looked closely at the newer figures on display and did indeed see some nice articulation joints in place. Elbows and knees that bend, rockers in the waist, you name it. Mass Effect: Andromeda figures of the Ryder siblings also showed this welcome change.
Other new Color Tops figures on display included Handsome Jack and Tiny Tina from Borderlands 2. I asked if the four playable characters – Axton the Commando, Maya the Siren, Salvador the Gunzerker, and Zer0 the Assassin – were a possibility for the series. While our McFarlane representative wouldn’t confirm or deny their inclusion later in the series, a sly smirk implied they’ll happen if sales of Tina and Jack are good.
Titanfall 2 was also represented with new Color Tops figures of Jester and Blisk on display. These should be hitting retail soon. Also arriving soon is the long awaited 10-inch Titan figure: BT-7274. McFarlane apologized for the delay, but the wait appears to be worth it.
Destiny was another surprise license shown at Toy Fair, the line represented by three 6″ scale action figures (Titan, Warlock, and Hunter), 6″ scale Iron Gjallarwing, a towering 10″ figure of Lord Saladin, and a MASSIVE new role play item: the Iron Gjallarhorn. Look for the mighty weapon with electronic sound effects this Fall priced at a SRP of $149.99.

While Color Tops had a bumpy start, the line is shaping up to be a return to McFarlane’s glory days: affordably priced articulated action figures from a variety of cool properties. Heck, even Spawn is back.
