Earlier this week, we reviewed the recently released Planet Hulk DVD. While the original comic story is epic, Lionsgate and Marvel Studios did a great job with the animated film. Unfortunately, one (fairly major) change had to be made to the animated film: the exclusion of the Silver Savage (ie - Silver Surfer). Because the rights to the Silver Surfer are still owned by 20th Century Fox, the character was (unfortunately) replaced in the animated film by Thor supporting character Beta Ray Bill.

While casual fans probably won't notice, mind or even care, for those of us who know the import role the Silver Savage plays in the Planet Hulk comic arc, it's a bit of a disappointment. I know I was a bit stunned...and maybe even a bit hurt (I even cried a little on the inside!) Thankfully, for those of us who like the Silver Savage in Planet Hulk, Sideshow has delivered the Green Scar vs. Silver Savage Statue which succeeds in giving the character the attention he deserves! And let's not forget Green Scar either...

    PACKAGING:

As with all of Sideshow's large - and heavy - statues, this piece comes packaged perfectly in a heavy-duty cardboard box with attractive graphics. The front and back feature images of the statue, which the two sides of the box feature information about each character. The individual pieces which make up the statue are surrounded by Styrofoam on the inside, ensuring this pieces reaches your display shelf in pristine condition.

    SCULPT & PAINT APPLICATION:

This is a very dynamic and eye-catching statue, as you can tell by the photos above. Created by amazing artists who make up the Sideshow Collectibles Design and Development Team, this is - in my opinion - one of the most impressive Marvel pieces to come out of Sideshow.

Based on one of the most popular Hulk storylines ever, the Hulk - as Green Scar - finds himself fighting for his life against one of the most powerful beings in the universe: the Silver Surfer (Silver Savage). Both warriors' poses capture the intensity of the battle, the Hulk ready to smash the smaller but no less powerful Surfer with either his fist or his massive battle axe (above). One of the most impressive things about this piece is the multiple display options. Thanks to the interchangeable fist/battle axe and the exclusive accessory (in this case, a helmet), allows for at least 4 different display options.

In turn, while the surfer doesn't have any interchangeable parts, he does come armed with a mace and his board as a shield (below). While the Surfer may finds himself on the defense, he's no doubt ready to sneak in an attack under the Hulk's guard.

The Surfer's dynamic pose is emphasized by an amazing paint application of a smooth, shiny silver coat which gives his skin an almost mirror appearance. Likewise, his armor, loincloth, and weapons area all masterfully painted with little to no bleeding anywhere.

The Hulk, in turn, is painted a vibrant green which immediately catches the eye and ensures any who might question this warrior identity know it's the Hulk. Like the Surfer, the Hulk's armor is expertly sculpted and painted - specifically the Hulk's shield and left arm/shoulder, which show the pits, scars and stains of many a battles fought.

The sheer intensity of the Hulk's visage is complimented perfectly by the paints on his face; everything from the helmet's plum on the exclusive accessory to the warrior's teeth are captured perfectly (above).

To top things off, both figures include individual bases featuring the dirty, broken rubble scattered about the fighting grounds. The detail is impressive, but what's really impressive is, as the bases can be disconnected, each piece can be displayed either together (as a diorama) or as individual statues. While many would question displaying the pieces separately, I can imagine a fan using the pair as book ends, the fan's numerous graphic novels and comics in between these two warring combatants.

    COST & OVERALL IMPRESSION:

Standing 15" high, 12" wide and 18" long (when both pieces are together), this is an impressive statue to behold. As I said before, the dynamic nature of the sculpt and the sheer intensity which radiates off this piece makes it one of the most impressive Marvel pieces Sideshow has released. For die-hard Hulk fans, this statue belongs in your collection or display.

Priced at $299.99, Sideshow still has the exclusive available. While some might consider this a bit on the high end, when the level of detail, paint, and size are taken into account, this piece makes for an investment into displaying one of the most amazing Hulk battles in recent comic history.

After all, who else besides the Hulk would even consider fighting the Silver Surfer with their bare hands?

Be sure to check out our PHOTO GALLERY for over 45 images of this statue, many by the very talented photographer Stephen McGill!
