REVIEW: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Half Shell Heroes Dino Figures

    Even More TMNT Dino Fun...

Review and Photos by David Yeh

Our favorite Heroes in a Half Shell are back to toy shelves with brand new HALF SHELL HEROES figures with even more dino-fun! Playmates Toys has continued to create a lot more new product for the kid centric Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line, and while this isn’t the first time they’ve been paired with dinosaurs, the dinosaurs this go-round are much, much larger! We’ll take a look at four of these toys, all of which are in the $12.99 range with the exception of the T-Rex that comes in at a reasonable $19.99.

The three smaller sets consists of medium size dinosaur with a smaller figure. In this assortment we have a Stegosaurus with Michelangelo; Pterodactyl with Raphael; and a Robo Raptor with Treceraton. Packaging continues the tradition of open air carded releases, allowing your kids to get a better sense of the toy they’re getting, but it doesn’t make getting the toys out any easier. You’ll still need a good pair of scissors to release the dinos from their cardboard cage.

The Stegosaurus (with Mikey) is a colorful purple beast wearing an orange mask. A throne or chair is fixed on top of his back for Mikey to slide his feet into while a button directly behind the seat gives the Stegosaurus a slashing tail and moving head feature. The four legged beast also has articulated arms and legs to aid with the play. Mikey himself is mostly a re-release of a previous Mikey figure, but this time his hands don’t come with permanent nunchucks sculpted on.

The Pterodactyl (with Raph) might be a quick favorite. Winged dinosaur toys usually cannot stand on their own but this one certainly can. His feet can be positioned in flight mode as well and an articulated jaw makes this an especially fun toy. Like the stegosaurus, there’s a seat on its back for Raphael to slide his feet into, only this one is red to match the red mask. Push a button on the back of the Pterodactyl to flap his wings. Raph is another re-release figure but like Mikey, comes without his weapons sculpted into his hands.

Robo Raptor (with Triceraton) is unfortunately the least fun of this grouping, which is actually a bit of shame since he’s the villain. The raptor can’t really be ridden by Triceraton but is just a remote control robot raptor to attack the turtles. Twist his tail around for some swinging head movement but aside from that, it’s not as interesting as the turtles’ dinosaurs.

Last but not least is the T-Rex with Donnie. The much larger set gives us an impressively big dinosaur to play with. Wearing a purple mask and with a purple seat on his back, this Rex is ready to chomp down on the bad guys with a push of a button on his back.

Donatello as well as the other figures all sport the same level of articulation in their neck, arms and legs. The ball jointed shoulders make some decent poses but the legs generally don’t do much aside from sitting and standing.

In the end, all the dino Half Shell Heroes are really fun toys and perfect for the young turtle fans in your family. Priced at $12.99 to $19.99, it’s a hard value to beat as well. Find this collection and more Half-Shell Heroes at your local retailers now!
