PHOTO REVIEW: NECA SDCC13 Exclusive Friday the 13th Jason ('89 Video Game Appearance)

    So Bad, It's Good...

One of the coolest convention exclusives offered this year was NECA's San Diego Comic-Con 2013 Exclusive Friday the 13th Jason (1989 Video Game Appearance). The $25 exclusive was the talk of the Con, the nostalgic blend of figure and packaging hitting all the right buttons with collectors (no pun intended). Part of the exclusive's appeal is in how NECA went about creating the figure. Based on a custom 8-bit Jason figure made by Will Edwards, NECA impressed the toy collecting community by honoring one of their own. Giving credit were credit is due, Edwards' name is listed on the packaging with a "Special Thanks". Classy.

The other half of the exclusive's appeal, however, is in the packagin design. NECA's idea to sell the figure in a fifth window box that closely resembles the classic NES cartridge packaging is simply brilliant. "Comic Con Exclusive 2013" replaces the original manufacturer logo, while "Official NECA Seal of Quality" smartly subs for Nintendo's quality seal. The neatest part is when you open the fifth panel. Fans that have played the game will find themselves grinning ear to ear with nostalgia. On the right is a clear look at Jason - in all his hidious purple and blue 8-bit animated glory. This side is meant to replicate one of your rare encounters with Jason Voorhees in the game - your ebbing "Children" health bar located at the top and Jason's practically maxed out health running along the bottom. The left panel mirrors your defeat in the game with the hilarious message "YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ARE DEAD. GAME OVER." It's hard to top that.

If there was ever an exclusive to keep in packaging, this is it. I've always been one to rip open a figure and throw away the pack, but in this case the box art is so essential to the figure - it's a complete package, if you will. Click the link below to check out over 45 new photos of this awesome exclusive, including loose shots of the monstrous 8-bit Jason figure inside!

Hey, thanks for the shout-out! It was indeed nice for NECA to do that. They didn't have to, but it just goes to show that people can surprise you!
