As you’ve no doubt seen from our ongoing coverage of Comic-Con, Mattel has a huge presence at the show with a major booth and a number of panels showing off new and upcoming products. I had the pleasure of attending Mattel’s DC Comics panel at San Diego, and it turned out to be quite momentous. Over the next year the company is starting a new 4 inch figure line and totally revamping its 6 inch scale as well. You can check out photos of all slides shown at the panel, but here are the quick hits:

Panelists included: Julian Montoya (WB Consumer Products), Kevin Kiniry (DC Entertainment), Ames Kirshen (WB Interactive Entertainment), H. Eric “Cornboy” Mayse (Four Horsemen), Danielle McLachlan (Mattel Marketing), Ruben Martinez (Mattel Product Design), Bill Benecke (Mattel Product Design) [Note: interestingly Scott “Toy Guru” Neitlich was not in attendance]
Man of Steel Movie Masters line continues with an upcoming black suit Superman. All figures in this line were sculpted by the Four Horsemen
Debuting with Man of Steel are new Quick Shots toys, small figures that fly via slingshot action
Batman Classic TV Series will see lots of products including a Julie Newmar Catwoman figure with increased articulation and gold claws (who is appropriately scaled taller than Adam West Batman), the Batmobile with seatbelts (and it fits the figures with their cloth capes!), the SDCC exclusive Batusi Batman, and much more. In addition to the SDCC exclusive Catwoman Barbie there will be a Batman Ken later in 2013
In 2014 Movie Masters will shrink down to a 4 inch scale with the new title “DC Comics Multiverse” and feature characters from both video games and films
The initial Multiverse plan is 3 waves, 18 figures, coming to shelves in Spring of 2014. Figures will have 14 points of articulation
Multiverse Wave 1: Arkham Origins Bane and Deadshot
Multiverse Wave 2: Arkham City Batman, Azrael, Mr. Freeze, Batman Armored Edition
A teaser for future movie-based Multiverse figures showed a film still and prototype image of Michael Keaton Batman!
In 2014 DC Universe Classics will be replaced by a new 6 inch line called “Total Heroes”
Initial Total Heroes plan is 10 figures at retail in 2014 starting in Spring. Figures will have 14 points of articulation and the new form factor was developed in collaboration with the Four Horsemen. Total Heroes will have fabric capes and accessories, and retail for $9.99!
6 of the initial 10 Total Heroes: Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Sinestro
Matty Collector will offer an exclusive Total Heroes Black Manta (Q1 2014, $20) with removable helmet, multiple weapons, and interchangeable hands and heads (animation/comic styles)
Fans in attendance at the panel got to vote for a figure. Choices were: Reverse Flash (my vote), Batman Beyond (the clear crowd favorite), Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes), or a Customizable Hero Builder with a generic body and multiple interchangeable parts (I have to admit that the panelists didn’t really do a great job selling this one)
