The LEGO Brick celebrates its 55th Birthday today. LEGO owes everything to this little guy, so what better way to celebrate than with a photo album of its life and times!

An earlier version of our beloved brick! Not fully evolved in to the brick we know and love today, this brick did not have the system in which the pieces fit together and stay together!

This is one of the patent drawings for the LEGO Brick which uses the LEGO system. This marked the birth of the classic LEGO Brick!

The application for the patent was successful and this was the very certificate to prove it!

Early moulding machines in action at the LEGO factory in Billund, Denmark. Did you know that on average, every person on Earth owns 80 LEGO bricks!

And this is what the moulding machines look like today! Over the years, approximately 600 billion LEGO elements have been manufactured! Plenty to go around!

There's been some iconic moments in the life of a LEGO Brick, including this golden number!

The LEGO Brick is now used by artists like Nathan Sawaya to create awesome sculptures.

And you can even attempt to build your own tower! This was the tallest LEGO tower built in the UK. Did you know that if you built a column of about 40 billion bricks, it would reach the moon!

The LEGO Brick is not just great for any imagination, it has helped us create classic sets like this...

...and out-of-this-world sets (literally!) like this!
