SDCC REVIEW: Mattel Polly Pockets DC Villains Set

Polly and the Gang Play Dress-Up Again...

Polly Pocket was first introduced in 1989 licensed in the US from Bluebird Toys in the UK. The popular miniature doll line was redesigned in 1998 to its current form featuring 3 ¾ scale fashion dolls with interchangeable clothing. This year’s exclusive collector set marks Polly & friends third appearance at Comic-con with her first being a DC Superheroes set and the second was last year’s She-Ra character set. The newest exclusive stars Polly along with friends Lilia and Lea as some of the most popular villainesses of DC comics: Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn.

The set comes packaged in an outer shipper box featuring artwork of the girls against a cityscape.

The highlight of the set is the colorful packaging featuring comic art panels on all of the sides including a humorous scene on the back.

The packaging slides apart in the middle to reveal the characters packed inside positioned on a rooftop with a city sprawling out behind them.

The figures for the most part are pre-posed with very minor to no articulation, but this doesn’t stop them from looking very cool and incredibly cute. The paint is done very cleanly and the details and costumes perfectly convey what character the girl is dressed as. Catwoman’s whip and Harley’s mallet accessories are removable, held on by tiny rubber bands.

As tempting as it is to open this set-up and check out the figures first hand, the packaging is so visually stunning and impressive that I wouldn’t want to destroy it in the removal process.

While last year’s She-Ra set is probably my favorite of the Polly character sets, this one is definitely a close second. I like that Mattel went with a more dynamic posed figure instead of the typical static figures. Overall a great looking set to display with your DC Comics collectibles.
