ADVANCE REVIEW: NECA's SDCC Exclusive Comic Book FREDDY KRUEGER

Elm Street Slasher Shreds Mark Gray and His Skateboard...

The burnt dream-stalking boogie man is back, but this time he is presented to you in glorious gray scale. The latest Freddy Krueger action figure from NECA is based on the iconic comic book dream sequence from the fifth movie Dream Child in which Freddy literally rips his victim - Mark Gray - to shreds. Presented to you as one of this year’s many San Diego Comic-Con exclusives, we are excited to give you this first look at the upcoming figure.

The Comic-Con exclusive Black & White Freddy is packaged in the same rectangular clamshell package that most NECA action figures utilize today. The color insert features a creepy boiler room scene in red hues along the front with the iconic Nightmare on Elm Street logo along the top while the back showcases the figure within along with a mini bio, The bottom portion on the back of the insert showcases the upcoming pair of Freddy figures for Dream Warriors and Dream Child.

This exclusive Freddy figure consists of the same standard buck body from the previous releases with the exception of a brand new head sculpt and a knifed skateboard. The wrinkles on the pants and sweater are rendered flawlessly in three-dimensional form and the texture of the sweater closely resembles that of cotton material. As always, the artists at NECA do an amazing job in capturing the essence of the facial portrait in sculptural form and this one is no exception. Freddy features an angry facial expression with his eyes looking to the left. The facial scarring is highlighted amazingly well and adds depth to the overall piece. The hands also posses visual signs of burn scarring and the iconic knifed glove is sculpted flawlessly.

In the realm of articulation there is nothing different about this figure but the existing joints on the buck body present collectors with ample posing options. While I would have loved for this version of Freddy to have featured hinged knees for skate board poses, it’s understandable why NECA would not add new tooling for a summer exclusive. Comic Book Freddy features a ball-socket head, ball-socket wrists, ball-socket ankles, swivel waist, ball-socket shoulders and swivel/hinge elbows.

Although this figure is decorated in only black and white hues, NECA has done a fantastic job with the paint applications resulting in stunning eye-catching results. The figure also feature two packed-in accessories (bladed skateboard and paper Mark) which are pivotal elements of the film scene on which this exclusive is based on.

The paper version of comic geek Mark Grey is an awesome bonus to this figure and looks exactly like it did in the 1989 film paper cut and all. The cardboard standee is fully colored, double-sided and stands very well on its own thanks to the folded tabs that support it.

It is great to see my favorite horror character come to SDCC this year thanks to Randy Falk and the fine folks at NECA. This figure will surely make a great addition to anyone’s horror or Nightmare on Elm Street collection as it is the only comic version of Freddy to date and the only way you can have your very own paper Mark to rip to shreds. Grab your SDCC Exclusive Comic Book Freddy at NECA's booth #3145 priced at $25.

Keep it locked on Figures.com as we will bringing you the latest NECA news and photos direct from Comic-Con 2012 in just a few weeks.
