Aside from sharing a fighting robot theme, Mattel's 2001 Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots had very little in common with the classic 1964 toy of the same name. Where the original "Rock 'Em" was an actual game that pitted two players against each other with boxing robots, the new toy line was just that: action figures that collectors could pretend to fight, as well as swap and trade parts, such as weapons and armor. The concept was neat, but the execution came across rather juvenile - this was certainly a toy line aimed at a younger audience. I'm all fine with that, but I do hate when a classic property I grew up with receives a "modern makeover". Oh so often it ends up tarnishing a good name and its reputation. Thankfully, the new Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots' stay in the toy aisles was brief and forgettable... the 1964 classic remaining the true champion in the hearts of collectors and pop culture history.
