Hot Toys' newest release in support of Disney's TRON LEGACY is of the creator himself, Kevin Flynn as portrayed by Jeff Bridges. Kevin Flynn thus far is the first of two releases, the second being Sam Flynn and Lightcycle due out soon. As a huge fan of the film and the digital world that was created, I'm hoping Hot Toys will announce and release even more TRON collectibles. But until then, let's take a look at this 12" Kevin Flynn which is a major step-up from the Spinmasters smaller mass market toy line.

The box design is an attractive display piece in itself. The outer sleeve depicts the white Identity Disc that belongs to Flynn on an all black surface. It's an eye-catcher for sure, with bright graphics and an embossed disc for added effect. The inner box is a very traditional box with plastic tray within and a window on the front to see what you're getting. On the back of the package, a cleverly cut window shows the Identity Disc within as well as giving credit where credit is due and honoring the artistic team behind the figure.

Jeon Young Tae is the head sculptor of Kevin Flynn and he does a pretty bang-up job on it. I do have one gripe though and that would be in regards to his beard and the hair on the back of his head. The hair and beard just aren't scruffy enough to be movie-accurate. It's very clean cut so I can see where folks don't exactly see Kevin Flynn in this sculpt. From most angles though, it's a very strong headsculpt. The rest of the sculpted aspects are with his hands and feet, which I will discuss in greater detail below.

Head painter is J C Hong and I have no real complaints in regards to his portrat. The beard has decent shading though but still needs a bit more detail, is more than satisfactory.

The body used for Flynn is a TrueType body that boasts over 30 points of articulation. Thirty points is plenty, though there are a few joints that are restricted due to the costume. It's a necessary evil, however, and more important to have an accurate costume than a flexible one.

Speaking of costume, it's time to take a look at the accessories. Let's start with the outfits because in this box, you get two of them. There's a third outfit seen in the movie that isn't included here when (old) Kevin Flynn first meets Sam for the first time on the Grid. The outfit Kevin is wearing right out of the package is from the dinner table discussion scene. The white outfit consists of a pair of pants, long sleeved shirt, and a long sleeved robe with detachable data disc on the back. In this outfit, Kevin sports his Zen lifestyle with bare feet.

Also included is the black costume that consists of a long sleeved jacket with detachable data disc on the back, long sleeved robe, long sleeved shirt, pair of pants, and a pair of black boots that can be swapped with the feet. I certainly prefer the black outfit over the white, but it's still not perfect. When Kevin enters the End of Line Club, he is seen wearing a hood that is not included here. The black costume is also lined with white fabric to simulate the light features on the costume and unfortunately, it does not light up.

I do have a beef about the costumes and that is the plastic snaps used. It's certainly not as steep or useful as the metal snaps from yesteryear.

In addition to the two outfits with matching Identity discs, Kevin Flynn has a white bracelet and a black bracelet to be placed on his right wrist. He does come with a good amount of hands to lend to the believability. There are five interchangeable hands in all, including a pair of relaxed palms, pair of fists, and a right hand for holding the ldentity Disc.

The last bit of accessory is the fancy display base that turns on to reveal the title. Batteries are included and add to the professionalism of this figure.

Kevin Flynn is priced at about $150, and if you can get lower than that, consider that a deal. He's a great figure and highly recommended, especially if you're a TRON fan. It's unsure what the future of this line holds but I do hope that enough folks support the Kevin Flynn so that it persuades Hot Toys into making more from this property.

Re: Hot Toys Tron Legacy - KEVIN FLYNN

It's not that this figure is bad, it's just that it doesn't wow me. He seems kind of bare and unexciting. Sam on the other hand looks much cooler with the full on Suit and Light Cycle. If I had an extra $300 I'd totally pick him up.

And I know it's a longshot but I'm still hoping for a Quorra figure.

Totally agree - no "wow" factor at all. Really sells just because it's Jeff Bridges, but with it only looking kinda like him, it doesn't fully succeed there either. I'm with you, it's all about the full on suits. I'd love to see some of the cool looking badguys or classic TRON characters done. Quorra? Yeah, I'd buy that too.
