As previously reported, NECA will be releasing a Ghostface action figure to coincide with Scream 4's theatrical debut in April. Based on the look of the killer in Wes Craven's popular horror film series, the 7-inch tall collectible will feature a buck knife accessory and soft goods robe, skirt and sleeves.

Now, according to an interview on Scream Franchise Examiner, fans will also be receiving a short-packed "zombie" Ghostface variant, as well as a sculpted skirt Ghostface. The "zombie" variant will be packed 2 out of every case of 8 Ghostface figures. The sculpted skirt Ghostface is a running change of the orginal figure to please those not happy with the half-sculpted, half-soft goods figure (see prototype image below).

The interview with NECA's Randy Falk states:

We have heard from some of the fan community that they are not happy with the mixed mediums and the use of soft goods which is disappointing but in an effort to please everyone we are going to make a running change in the production and switch to a sculpted skirt. That way both versions are on the market and those who don’t mind the fabric and want to pose the legs more can buy the initial soft goods version and those who prefer the fully sculpted all plastic figure can wait and purchase that version. We listen and value the fan’s opinions and want to try to satisfy everyone.

In addition to the Ghostface action figures, NECA will also be releasing a resin Ghostface Head Knocker.

So will the zombie variants be given away free at random with the purchase of a new ghostface figure or can you simply buy a zombie variant but they'll just be in short supply?

You have to buy the zombie variant. It will be rarer than the standard version - 2 in every case of 8 figures.
