First published in 1865, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” or “Alice in Wonderland” has been adapted countless times over the years, both by itself and mixed and combined with it’s sequel ‘Through The Looking Glass”, with the most famous version being Disney’s own animated feature film from 1951. Disney now returns to the classic tale with one of the most original and bizarre film adaptations ever, a new twist on the classic stories that could only come from the mind of Tim Burton.
The 2009 version of Alice in Wonderland takes a huge detour from the original story while still maintaining the core ideas and beloved characters of the classic. This film acts as more of a sequel to the original story, showing us a 19-year old Alice who returns to magical place of her dreams and rediscovers memories from her past on her way to finding her destiny. Along the way she reunites with the cast of zany characters she met years before such as the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), The White Queen (Anne Hathaway), the Cheshire Cat, and the White Rabbit.
The Alice in Wonderland 3-Disc Combo Pack presents the colorful and odd world of Wonderland in beautiful, crystal-clear 1080p High Definition picture with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track that supports Danny Elfman’s hauntingly appropriate score. The set also continues the soon-to-be-tradition of Disney releasing both a DVD version of the film and an extra Digital Copy for computer and portable use. This is increasingly becoming a must-have incentive for fans to upgrade to then new format.
While the DVD release has some special features, the bulk of the material has been saved for the Blu-Ray release. The over one dozen featurettes explore several facets of the film, both in the development of the characters and its overall creation. Features Finding Alice, The Mad Hatter, The Red Queen, and the White Queen all deal with the visions for each character, speaking with the actors and showcasing make-up and costume effects. The Futterwacken shows how they found the dancer who enacted the (in)famous scene. Time-Lapse: The Red Queen gives fans a look at the process that turned Helena Bonham Carter into the Red Queen. Effecting Wonderland, Making the Proper Size, Stunts of Wonderland, Cakes of Wonderland, and Tea Party Props all deal with the shaping of the world in the film, from the digital effects and action sequences to the creation of the props. Lastly, Scoring Wonderland talks with Tim Burton and composer Danny Elfman about the film’s music.
So whether you’re young or old, you’d have to be mad as a hatter to not enjoy the fantastical, humorous, and odd retelling of Alice in Wonderland. The Alice in Wonderland 3-Disc Combo Pack is now available from from Disney Home Entertainment.
