There are several great Hellboy collectibles on the market today, from small PVC figurines to hyper detailed 1/6th scale action figures and beyond. Perhaps one of the most impressive Hellboy collectibles ever made is Sideshow's Hellboy "The Golden Army" Premium Format Figure. This high-end polystone masterpiece is the ultimate static Hellboy collectible and we are proud to present you with an in-depth review of this fantastic mixed-media statue.

PACKAGING: The packaging for this ¼ scale collectible features several dramatically lit photographs of the statue from different angles along with the official Hellboy Golden Army film logo. The overall design of the packaging is very dark which contrasts very well with the golden colored film logo. Although the actual collectible is housed within the box, the outer carton is very visually appealing as well.

SCULPT: This piece is truly an example of ¼ scale sculpted perfection as evident in the intricate details on Hellboy's body. The portrait head sculpt and facial expression captures actor Ron Pearlman's likeness almost flawlessly with an impressive amount of detail. Big Red's muscular physique is rendered gracefully in polystone and the figure's dynamic pose generates an imposing sense of power.

The Right Hand of Doom is rendered flawlessly and captures the texture and look of solid rock. The Rosary and other relics that Hellboy carries on his belt are incredibly life-like and made up of very high quality materials. The decorative base which accompanies the figure is a one-of-a-kind design which significantly enhances the overall look of the piece. Sideshow's creative team cleverly incorporated different elements from the film resulting in a weathered column with an infused mechanical gear wheel. The top of the base depicts the look and feel of concrete shattering under Hellboy's powerful stone fist. The Samaritan pistol on Hellboy's left hand is sculpted immaculately and looks movie-accurate.

PAINT: The quality of the paint application on this piece is no surprise based on Sideshow's reputation. Hellboy's face and body are painted extremely well. The airbrushed red tones on the skin significantly enhance the figure's muscular and anatomical features. The accessories and decorative base are masterfully painted with the highest level of accuracy and precision.

The Samaritan pistol is also painted amazingly well and looks like the real deal although it is actually sculpted out of polystone as the rest of the piece. There is no paint mis-applications or flaws noticeable anywhere on this particular statue thanks to Sideshow's commitment to keep their quality standards as high as possible.

ACCESSORIES & CLOTHING: The clever blend of finely tailored fabric apparel and polystone make this piece a most impressive and visually stunning high-end collectible. Hellboy's fabric trenchcoat is made of a high quality material and has wiring sewn into the seams allowing the coat to be posed dynamicly. The coat also features metal buckles on the collar and an embroidered BPRD leather-like patch on the left shoulder.

Perhaps on of the most amazing elements of this 1/4 scale figure is the realistic leather-like belt and working holster. The belt has a movie-accurate metal BPRD buckle with several storage pouches along the back. Sadly, the beauty and craftsmanship of the belt cannot be fully appreciated at first glance since it is mostly covered by Hellboy's coat.

Big Red's pants are also made of a shiny leather-like material and features a hole on the back allowing his long red tail piece to be attached to the figure with ease during assembly. The statue can be firmly attached to the base by inserting a thick metal rod which sticks out from the bottom of the left boot into a square hole on the surface of the decorative column.

COST & OVERALL IMPRESSION: There are numerous Hellboy collectibles available for purchase today but none of them can compare to this masterfully executed polystone masterpiece. This particular piece has become the holy grail of my personal Hellboy collection and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the comics or films.

I am truly surprised that this piece did not sell out a long time ago, but I guess that is a good thing for those who may have overlooked it or could not afford it's hefty $300 + price tag when it was originally released. Now it is much easier to add this amazing statue to your collection by taking advantage of Sideshow's gift card elegibility which can considerably reduce what you pay for it depending on the value of your card. However, I would not think twice about ordering this piece. The Hellboy Premium Format Figure is limited to just 1000 pieces and may soon disappear forever.
