Watchers of Cartoon Network’s DC Nation cartoon block are familiar with the brief clay-animated shorts that feature your favorite DC Superheroes such as Superman, Batman & Robin, and even Joker and Catwoman. Animated by Aardman Animation (Wallace & Gromit, Flushed Away, Chicken Run), the characters are voiced by British children saying some of the darndest things with the most random of bits of animation to support them.
The first figure in conjunction with these Aardman designs is the caped crusader himself, Batman, and if you ever were interested in owning him, you’ll have your chance this weekend at the New York Comic Con at the Graphitti Designs booth for $25.
Created and released by DC Collectibles, this exclusive Aardman Batman is designed by Rich Webber and sculpted by Phil Ramirez. If you’ve watched the animation, you’ll see that Aardman Batman is sculpted just as he was seen on screen. There’s an unevenness to the surface that is pretty convincing (at least to me) in giving off the impression that this is a clay figure. It has the home-made quality to it that fans of Aardman will certainly appreciate.
Where Batman is pretty limited in articulation with only shoulder and neck joints, he makes up for it in personality and height, standing just a bit over six inches tall (Robin will need to be much much taller!). His left hand is clenched into a fist and right hand can be used to point or to hold his included batarang accessory.
The paint on Aardman Batman is simple and to the point. We don’t need any fancy wash or shaders on this one; just simple flat colors that keeps the clay-styled plastic looking authentic.
With Batman under the belt, one can only assume that Superman and the rest of the gang are next. Pick up this exclusive at the New York Comic Con along with the Green Lantern 2-pack of John Stewart and Red Lantern Atrocitus (also $25) this weekend!
