Ever since the release of STAR WARS in the summer of 1977, comic books have been around for the ride; from Marvel Comic’s first movie adaptation to Dark Horse's many expanded universe comics on shelves today. To celebrate the close relationship of Star Wars and comics, Abrams Books have published an art book that showcases many of the original pieces of art, a collection three decades in the making, into one stunning 180 page hard-bound book.

STAR WARS ART: COMICS features pencil roughs, inked pages, and painted covers from many popular Star Wars artists such as Dave Dorman (jacket front pictured top), Tim Bradstreet, and many more. Along for the ride are 20+ all-new commissions by Arthur Adams, John Cassaday, Amanda Conner, Mike Kaluta, Sam Keith, Joe Kubert, David Lapham, Mike Mignola (jacket back), George Perez, Paul Pope, Frank Quitely, John Romita Sr., Tim Sale, Jeff Smith, Ryan Sook, Jim Steranko, and J.H. Williams III.

The collection of art is hand-selected and curated by George Lucas with a forward by Dennis O’Neil, preface by Douglas Wolk, and introduction by Virginia Mecklenburg. Another highlight, aside from the remarkable art, are the Artists’ Biographies in the back of the book that offer some insight to who is behind the remarkable visions and also pointing out what other pages their art can be found. It accelerates this book from being just a great coffee table book to an impressive resource as well. To close the book is a transcript of a conversation between George Lucas, artist Howard Chaykin, marketing and merchandising vice president Charles Lippincott, and editor Roy Thomas regarding the Star Wars comic book. It’s a rare trip into history thanks to the Lucasfilm archives.

Star Wars Art: Comics is the second book in the “Star Wars Art” series (the first one being Star Wars Art: Visions) and retails for $40. It’s an incredible collection of art and highly recommended for yourself or a fan of Star Wars. You don’t need to be a follower of the comic books to appreciate this book.
