REVIEW: Funko SDCC13 MOTU Skeletor Pop Vinyl & Bobblehead

Two Cool Exclusives For He-Man Fans...

Funko continues to be the leading producer of collectible bobble-heads in the market today, spanning a wide range of licenses and pop culture icons. The product range not only includes their traditional bobble-heads called Wacky Wobblers but also several unique in-house lines including POP! Vinyl, Blox, and Funko Force. Funko has also become one of the highlights of the San Diego Comic-Con, hosting a modestly sized booth that gets tremendously large crowds due to an ever-increasing selection of con exclusives. This year was no exception with a grand total of over 57 items, ranging from My Little Pony and TMNT, to Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead so there is something for everyone. One of their newest licenses, Masters of the Universe, managed to inspire two separate releases for fans of the classic cartoon.

The first is the Masters of the Universe Metallic Skeletor Wacky Wobbler. This exclusive gives the regular version of Skeletor and metallic sheen. He is packaged in the same box as the regular version of the bobble-head, with a Grayskull inspired green stone and artwork of the character from the show, but with a sticker to indicate it's exclusive designation. Depicting Skeletor standing on a Grayskull-themed base with a name placard and holding his Havok Staff, the bright, shiny paint apps is very eye-catching. While most of the collectible is painted in straight 1-color applications, I appreciate that his blue skin has some variation to accentuate the muscles. While there are some issues with paint application, they really aren’t noticeable unless inspected very closely.

The second Comic-Con exclusive is a variant version of the Pop! Vinyl Skeletor figurine. This particular variant is named “Disco” Skeletor and is inspired by the fan named and extremely odd repaint of the Skeletor action figure from Mattel’s 2000 series Masters of the Universe line. Just like the Wacky Wobbler, this collectble is packaged the same as it’s regular version, but with a sticker. The variant features a color scheme with black, purple, and gold detailing on the costume and a bright orange face for Skeletor. The character is depicted holding his staff in both hands and the head can be positioned side to side. Compared to other Pop! Vinyl figures that I own, this one is one of my favorites, but is also painted poorly as well, with a lot of bleeding and visible glue on the staff.

Masters of the Universe is a hot property right now and fans of the cartoon and toy line are sure to want to add these cool exclusives to their collections. While I’d be surprised if these didn’t sell out at the con, I’m sure they are available through various online retailers.
