After two amazing sets of DC Comics-based MIMOBOT USB flash drives (see our reviews of Batman and Green Lantern), Mimoco is expanding its line of popular culture collection with one of the most famous franchises of all time... Transformers! And in a nice change of pace from the overload of movie products these new Mimobots recreate the look of the Generation 1 Autobot and Decepticon leaders, a perfect blend of nostalgia and current technology. Available now is the Transformers x MIMOBOT USB Flash Drive Collection with Optimus Prime and Megatron!

MIMOBOTS surround high quality USB drives with a firm plastic shell in the general shape of a tall-headed humanoid. At about 2.5 inches tall and 1 inch wide, they’re the perfect size for travel and use, while at the same time being fun collectibles. The beauty of the MIMOBOT is its simplicity, and the “sculpt” is limited to the general soft body shape, stumpy arms, and optional head decorations (some even have hairpieces that fit over the main body). Pop off the top of a MIMOBOT’s head to reveal the USB port (utilizing high speed USB 2.0 and fully Mac/PC compatible), and secure it again with a solid snap. Most MIMOBOTs are available in your choice of capacities: 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and a whopping 64GB. Mimoco even goes a step further by offering exclusive pre-loaded “Mimory” including fun wallpapers, icons, and more.

Both members of the Transformers x MIMOBOT collection come packaged in the same basic box, the structure of which you’ll recognize from previous Mimoco releases. Recreating the classic Transformers toy package elements, the Mimobot boxes are tall and narrow with a front-facing window so you can see your Autobot or Decepticon. The identical package design has the retro black and red to yellow grid pattern that we all grew up with, along with the G1 Transformers logo at the top. Also on the front panel is a Mimobot silhouette surrounding the window, the Mimobot logo, and the drive’s capacity. The back panel of the Transformers Mimobot boxes continues the same background pattern that surrounds another clear window with Autobot and Decepticon symbols as well as notes about the included Mimory and more available info on the Mimoco homepage. Inside the window is an insert that shows the two Transformers Mimobots and a sampling of the company’s other pop culture licenses.

No matter the crazy versions that have come out over the years, Transformers began way back in 1984 with the heroic Optimus Prime and his Autobots battling the evil Megatron and his Decepticon flunkies. Back then Prime transformed into a flat-front truck cab, while his counterpart mimicked a Walther P38 pistol (with various accessories). With distinctive and unique color palettes, these characters made an immediate visual impression that’s lasted more than 25 years.

Optimus Prime is really cute, with his truck cab body looking extra chubby on his little Mimobot body. He’s got tons of great painted detail recreating that original design down to all of the lines and panels, truck grille and windows (with wipers!), etc. There are even Autobot symbols on each shoulder! Prime’s giant head has the requisite mouth plate with vents on either side, and his Mimobot employs the pointy eared cap to represent the Transformer’s head spikes. Details go all the way around, and so Prime’s back is decorated with more technological details. Optimus is painted in bright colors, dominated by blue on the head and red on the body. On top of that are tons of additional detail colors in silver, light blue, white, black, gray, and yellow. It’s highly glossy and utilizes lots of metallic hues as well.

On the other side of the eternal conflict is Megatron, who is much more color coordinated in his classic silver and black. Owing to the Decepticon’s original design, there are overall fewer details than on Prime, but what has been included really brings to mind that first version and its toy. Megatron’s original transformation scheme didn’t leave much in the way of visible gun parts in his robot mode, and so it is on the Mimobot; you can’t really get a sense of his alt mode except for the small barrel on his back. But, there are still lots of painted details including a Decepticon chest logo, “belt” with buttons and lines, and plenty of panels and geometric shapes. The entire central portion of the Mimobot is taken up by Megatron’s leering face, which is one of the best I’ve ever seen in their character line. And the evil leader’s smooth head piece is perfectly painted to bring to life the old “bucket head” design. On top of all of the silver and black Megatron has details in purple, red, and yellow with the same high quality mix of glossy and metallic paints.

Once you’re done playing with your MIMOBOTs, you can of course also plug them into your computer! And when you do, you get not only high quality USB drives, but also fun “Mimory” components that let you customize your computer with great Transformers content. Both Optimus Prime and Megatron drives come with the same content broken down into four categories. Twelve Avatars (in two different sizes each) let you represent yourself online as either of the two leader robots in different styles, the faction symbols, or even Starscream. Nineteen Icons include character art of these and other Transformers, mini Mimobots, logos, drives and folders decorated with Autobot and Decepticon logos, and the planet Cybertron.

In the Wallpapers folder you’ll find nine images featuring the Transformers Mimobots, Megatron, and Optimus Prime in multiple screen formats including those optimized for mobile devices. There’s even a screensaver featuring the two Mimobots and images of classics Transformers toys and 1985 movie art. Finally, the Cybertronian Mimobots have a special “Transformers Interface” that loads up an interactive program with even more content. After choosing your faction you get a brief history of Transformers, eight character bios, eight full-length classic comics to read, three behind the scenes videos, a gallery of classic Hasbro toys, art, and novelty items, an overview of the Mimodesk content, and a soundboard with six fun effects. The Interface alone can keep you occupied for hours!

However, the fun doesn’t even stop there. When you’re on the go Mimoco has the perfect solution for your flash media needs, the Spacesuit protoHoodie! Available in black or white (and with versions for MIMOBOTs with differently shaped ears), the Hoodies enclose your characters in soft fabric while allowing them to see out through the thin layer of clear vinyl. Hoodies zip up behind your MIMOBOT securely and have a clip at the top for attaching to your keychain, backpack, or just about anything else!

The Optimus Prime and Megatron Mimobots are available now in drive sizes from 2 to 64GBs. Transformers fans and especially those nostalgic for Generation 1 will absolutely love these. Bright and colorful with decos immediately recognizable as the classic characters, these functional and fun products are useful for anyone!

Make sure to enter our exclusive giveaway to win an Optimus Prime Mimobot with protoHoodie!
