Dreamworks Animation continues to bring to life fun, holiday-themed short films featuring everyone's favorite characters from fan-favorite feature-length films like MegaMind, Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon and everyone's favorite cast of zoo animals, Madagascar.

Last fall I reviewed Madagascar 3 and now, for fans who love Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo there's the latest holiday-themed short, Madly Madagascar, available now on DVD home video.

Featuring an enjoyable jaunt back to the African continent, Madly Madagascar finds the cast of the series up to their regular ridiculousness. Alex misses the Valentines he used to receive from his admirers back in New York, Marty falls for an Okapi who's only interested in him after she is given a love potion, and Melman and Gloria spend their first Valentine's Day as a couple...with Melman of course going a bit overboard. And what would a Madagascar film be with the Penguins and King Julien getting into trouble too?

Featuring smartly-written characters, engaging humor and some fun emotional moments, Madly Madagascar does a great job of providing die-hard fans of the series a Valentine's Day-themed short. Taking place between the second and third films, Madly Madagascar features all of the original voice cast save Sacha Baron Cohen (who was replaced by Danny Jacobs). Sadly, the film lasts only 22 minutes and will be disappointing to fans expecting something more. Thankfully DreamWorks includes two other shorts on the disc - Hammy’s Boomerang Adventure, features characters from Over the Hedge as well as an enjoyable and touching short from 2006, First Flight.

Considering it's priced at $14.95, way too much for a DVD featuring only 3 short films, the purchase is a bit of a disappointment. However, for those who bargain shop and find the DVD on sale for less than $5.00, it's a solid buy - especially if you're a die-hard DreamWorks Animation fan.

Madly Madagascar is available now on DVD wherever fine home video is sold.
