Returning to DVD after a brief hiatus, the twenty-sixth animated feature film from Walt Disney Pictures, The Great Mouse Detective, was originally released in 1986. The film is based on a series of books “Basil of Baker Street: which is in turn heavily influenced by the original Sherlock Holmes stories.
Digitally restored and featuring a stunning Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound audio track, Disney fans of all ages will be entertained by this family-friendly animated adventure that takes viewers to the streets of London – from a mouse’s point of view. In the film, a young girl named Olivia seeks out the brilliant Basil of Baker Street, the famed mouse detective, in hopes that he can help her find her kidnapped father. Together with his new companion Dawson, Basil must use all of his wits to not only rescue the girl’s father, but also topple a nefarious scheme by the evil Dr. Ratigan.

While most of the voice cast is unknown, fans will certainly know the irreplaceable Vincent Price as Ratigan. While not widely known by name, Frank Welker provides the voice of Toby the Basset Hound. Welker is one of the most recognized voice actors in animation and film, most known for his work on Transformers the animated series.

As far as special features go, not much is new that hasn’t been carried over from the film’s previous DVD release. What is missing is the previously included animated shorts “Clock Cleaners” and “Donald’s Crime”. What is included is The Sing-Along-Song of “The World’s Greatest Criminal Mind” performed by Vincent Price as Ratigan and The Making Of The Great Mouse Detective featurette. New to this release, as with many recent DVD releases, is a interactive game called “So You Think You Can Sleuth” which also acts as a history of detective work.

While not in the caliber of the filmmakers Ron Clements and John Musker’s later films such as The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, The Great Mouse Detective is a memorable, entertaining animated film that belongs in any families’ Disney DVD collection. The Great Mouse Detective is available now from Disney Home Entertainment.
