ADVANCE REVIEW: NECA's SDCC Exclusive Evil Dead II "Hero From the Sky" Ash

Have Gun (and Chainsaw), Will Travel...

    * PLEASE NOTE: Packaged photos of Hero From the Sky Ash do not have a "SDCC 2012 Exclusive" sticker. The figure you buy at the show WILL.

This year has turned to be a great time to be an Evil Dead fan thanks to NECA. With the highly anticipated release of the second assortment of Evil Dead II figures consisting of Hero Ash and Henrietta releasing later, this month a fourth version of Ash will also be sold exclusively at the San Diego Comic-Con next week. “Hero from the Sky” Ash is based on the end scene of Evil Dead II when Ash finds himself teleported back in time, falling from the sky to the arid earth below. Greeted by a screeching flying Deadite, Ash instinctively dispatches the beast with a blast from his "boom stick" and is immediately heralded as a hero by the cheering armored knights that have gathered to watch.

The figure comes packaged within the same standard rectangular clamshell package that all other NECA figures utilize. The front of the insert sheet features The movie logo along the top and a sepia-colored negative of the woods in the background which reminds me of the opening sequence from the Tales from the Darkside TV series. The back of the insert features a portrait of the exclusive with bio and images of all four Evil Dead II figures along the bottom.

This exclusive version of Ash features the same body as the upcoming Hero Ash with a torn shirt and jeans. The head sculpt is new and features Ash’s blown-out hair look from the end sequence of Evil Dead 2. Just as all the other Ash figures, the sculpted details are amazing and very accurate to the wardrobe in the film.

This convention exclusive version of Ash also includes a very cool display base in the shape of a rock formation also based on the end sequence of Evil Dead II. The base is very well sculpted and made of a firm and thick plastic. Hero from the Sky Ash includes his trusty boomstick and chainsaw. The boom stick can be easily stored in a faux leather holster located behind Ash’s back.

This particular version of Ash ‘s color scheme consists of varying earth tones giving the figure a classic story book look that is unique and appealing to look at. This exclusive version of Ash also features a white patch of hair on the left side of the head which is consistent with the end sequence of the film. The display base features a very cool dry brush effect that really brings out the sculptural details of the stone formation.

The amount of articulation on Ash is vast and allows the figure to be displayed in a plethora of dynamic poses. This particular version of Ash features an additional ball-socket joint at the abdomen which gives this particular figure a wider range of motion that the first two figures in series one. The SDCC exclusive Ash features the following articulation:

    - Ball-Socket Head
    - Ball-Socket Shoulders
    - Ball-Swivel Elbows
    - Ball-Socket Wrists
    - Ball-Socket Abdomen
    - Swivel Waist
    - V-Cut Crotch
    - Swivel Thighs
    - Swivel/Hinged Knees
    - Ball-Socket Ankles

NECA's first assortment of Evil Dead II figures were incredible, but as a die-hard fan, the upcoming "Hero" Ash is the figure I've been waiting for. To me it's the definitive Ash from the movie, with boom stick and chainsaw in hand (rather, as a hand, har!). For those that can't wait until later this month for "Hero" Ash, "Hero from the Sky" Ash acts as a exciting advance debut. More than that, however, "Hero From the Sky" Ash stands apart as its own unique figure. With its cool sepia tone, display base, and Ash's now trademark white hair streak, this exclusive represents the unforgettable ending of Evil Dead II and the beginning of the equally popular Army of Darkness.

Grab your SDCC Exclusive "Hero From the Sky" Ash at NECA's booth #3145 priced at $25.

    * PLEASE NOTE: Packaged photos of Hero From the Sky Ash do not have a "SDCC 2012 Exclusive" sticker. The figure you buy at the show WILL.
