Back at San Diego Comic-Con 2010, artist Dan LuVisi broke onto the sci-fi scene with a book called LMS (Last Man Standing): Killbook of a Bounty Hunter (see our story HERE). Measuring a whopping 15" x 12", the amazing 230-page hardcover from Heavy Metal sold for a mere $35.

Last Man Standing: Meet Gabriel—last of a genetically engineered breed of supersoldiers known as the Paladin. After winning an interstellar war between Earth and Mars, Gabriel is celebrated back home and given the new title of Protector of Amerika. All goes well for the newly entitled superhero as he begins to rid the streets of the scum that plagues it. However, as Gabriel is distracted by his duties, a terrorist organization known as Pandemonium frames the hero for a series of atrocious crimes.

Now stripped of his title and prestige, Gabriel is sentenced to the notorious Level-9 Facility, where he endures nine long years of torture and imprisonment. But as the clock ticks down to Gabriel’s eventual demise, he is introduced to the elusive Agent O, who offers the Paladin a chance at redemption. Learn his story—and that of his allies and enemies—through Gabriel’s eyes, as he begins to orchestrate his revenge in the scarred and vivid world of New Amerika.

The book garnered legions of fans (including myself), selling out at the show and attracting the interest of Paramount Pictures, who have since bought the movie rights. Seeing his fan base grow, yet his out-of-print book beyond the reach of many (it sells for upwards of $450), Dan LuVisi has been working vigilantly for the last three years trying to find a new publisher to re-release the massive tome for the hungry masses. Enter Dark Horse, who this year inked a deal with LuVisi to publish LMS... this time packing over 40 extra pages of equally talented fan art. Like the original release, the reissue takes the form of a scrapbook filled with maps, history, over forty character biographies and dossiers, tons of faux advertisements, and much, much more. The standard release is this November ($44.99), but those lucky enough to attend this year's Comic-Con had the opportunity to purchase the SDCC13 Exclusive Edition ($75) with new cover art and the chance to have it signed by Dan LuVisi himself. Since Dan signed my 2010 copy with a cool "Get Some!", we agreed on the hilarious "Get Some... More!!!" for my new book. Dan's a funny guy.

While the LMS motion picture deal moves forward (2015-2016 release window), the exciting news to come out of Comic-Con was that a 14-inch tall Gabriel action figure is in the works. I'm not allowed to mention which company quite yet, but just look at that prototype above! Fans will get alternative headsculpts of Gabriel, one fully masked and the other battered and bruised smoking a digital cigarette (they don't cause cancer in the future). It even features Gabriel's trademark Skittles. Amazing stuff. Stay tuned for further news on this and other exciting LMS projects.
