Hot Toys, a Hong Kong production house, hit the scene in 2000 producing 1/6-scale military action figures. In 2003, they made their mark with the introduction of licensed properties such as Aliens and Terminator. Now they are one of the premier companies producing 1/6-Scale figures, making some of the finest detailed and authentic figures available today. Now Hot Toys has branched off again and created another subset to their 1/6-scale offerings.

The Video Game Masterpiece series brings the best characters from your favorite video games to life. Continuing the line based on the Capcom survival horror hit Resident Evil (Biohazard) 5, Hot Toys brings two more figures to life complete with authentic costumes and weaponry. This review covers the new version of franchise star Chris Redfield in his classic S.T.A.R.S. uniform.

PACKAGING: Chris comes boxed in a similar Hot Toys figure packaging to other characters in the series. The full-color box features a glossy, textured finish and has game artwork of the character on the front along with the RE5 logo. The back features photography of the figure, as well as a short bio, creative credits, and images of the other characters in the line. The flap in the front opens to reveal the figure encased in a plastic shell for protection. The accessories are packed in a separate shell that fits within the hollow in front of the figure when closed. The inside also features a landscape image from one of the many locales in the game.

SCULPT & ARTICULATION: One of the first things fans of the series will notice about the new Chris is that he seems oddly taller than the previous version. This is no trick of the eyes; he is actually around a half inch taller, not because of a different body, but because of new thick-heeled hiking boots. Aside from that, the S.T.A.R.S. Chris has the same head sculpt and body as the previous release. The detailed sculpt perfectly captures the messy spike and chiseled, unshaven jaw line of the RE hero. The body is the muscular body developed by Hot Toys that features sculpted musculature, veins, and hidden joints. Because of the limited range of motion, the body only has around 21 points of articulation and must be carefully posed following the included guide to avoid damaging the figure.

COSTUME & ACCESSORIES: The costume and accessories are definitely the reason most fans will want to pick up this figure, and they certainly justify purchasing another incarnation of Chris. The latest outfit replicates the uniform worn by Chris in the very first Resident Evil game and also an optional costume in the Resident Evil 5 Versus and Mercenaries modes. His outfit consists of his baggy pants, a shirt, and his signature olive drab tactical vest. The back of the vest features S.T.A.R.S. lettering while his left shoulder has a sewn fabric patch with the official S.T.A.R.S. team logo. Over his clothes he wears two removable belts, one with a shoulder strap, and a leg-mounted holster. He also features several belt-mounted pouches and kneepads. These items all feature real clips, plastic buckles, and loops.

Chris's basic gear includes a removable radio with attached headset, his huge knife and sheath, a flash grenade, and an incendiary grenade. His assortment of guns include a M9 handgun with removable clip, S&W M500 Magnum with removable clip, MP-5 Machine Gun with removable clip, and the ridiculously awesome Gatling Gun with removable backpack, rotating barrel, and ammo belt. He also includes three extra interchangeable hands and the standard Hot Toys display base with the Biohazard 5 logo. Another bonus is that Hot Toys graciously included a new alternate shirt meant for the previous version of Chris.

OVERALL: By far the coolest feature of the new Chris is his Gatling Gun, but this figure is a must-buy for fans of the main hero of the series. There's no better time than now to complete your Resident Evil 5 collection Hot Toys has recently commented that we may soon see more figures in series based on the popular and much-requested series heroine Jill Valentine! The Hot Toys Video Game Masterpiece Biohazard 5 Chris Redfield S.T.A.R.S. version is available now from Hot Toys!
