Buffy products are in no short supply. Between comics, novels, figures, statues, and more, "The Slayer" has a mountain of merchandise to her name. However, these pieces are usually similar in their realistic treatment of Buffy and company. Electric Tiki’s upcoming Tooned-Up Television Buffy shakes things up a bit with a highly-stylized approach. She’s a unique Buffy collectible that captures "The Slayer's" spirit in a lively animated way. Tracy Mark Lee, President of Electric Tiki Design, Inc., was willing to answer several of our burning questions on the new statue... MovieManiacs: Why do you think Buffy has retained its rabid fanbase for these past ten years? Tracy: Quite simply, it's a great show with interesting characters. I didn't start watching until (I think) Season 3. I figured it would be like the movie, but a friend of mine was a huge fan and convinced me to watch it. The characters are all unique and very compelling. It's easy to write it off as a goofy horror show, but the writing and performances were brilliant. You get the feeling that they were having a good time and that translates to the audience. The cast and crew also seem to appreciate their fan base more than other shows. MovieManiacs: How long has Buffy been a property on Electric Tiki's radar, and how does it feel to finally have her sculpted and ready for production? Tracy: Buffy is an odd choice for us since it's a newer show. We usually raid "Nick at Nite" for our licenses. With our relationship with Sideshow, I was convinced it could be a viable property. As far as having her ready for production, I couldn't be happier. It was a long hard process coming up with something I was happy with. At the end it was kind of a compromise. I still think our style comes through while sticking with costumes/themes from the show. MovieManiacs: Why was Buffy a good fit for Electric Tiki? Tracy: Well, I'm not quite sure if was a better fit than anything else. I love the show and I wanted to make it fit somehow. MovieManiacs: What types of collectibles are included in your licensing agreement? Tracy: For now, just character maquettes. MovieManiacs: The pose is very cute, and capture's the spirit of Buffy very well. What other variations of Buffy did you go through before arriving at the present one? Tracy: About 200-250 different variations, some of which can bee seen our website and in my new sketchbook. Some were very cartoony and a bit too generic. I think she was always holding a stake. Not until I decided to embrace the idea of basing the maquettes on actual episodes (per fans requests) did she get the pool cue and Slayer Scythe. MovieManiacs: What led you to base your Buffy Maquette on her appearance in "Once More With Feeling"? Tracy: Actually this was my third design. I wanted to do one version of Buffy with loose hair and one pony-tailed version. Our original design for the loose hair was actually from "Chosen", which was by far the most overwhelming fan request. It was, however rejected by the licensor, so we went with the "OMWF" version. The pony-tailed version will be from "End of Days" so we do get to do one with the cool scythe. MovieManiacs: Will you be releasing any variants or repaints of this statue? Tracy: We're not sure. We've had a couple of retailers express interest, but only if it makes sense. MovieManiacs: How did you determine Buffy's scale? Tracy: The Buffy scale is a bit smaller than our current "Tooned-Up" line. We simply wanted to bring them in at under $100 and appeal to the Buffy collector who may not be familiar with our products.
