Back when Hasbro’s first series of Indiana Jones action figures became available, it was announced that a special mail-away figure would be offered in their Ticket to Adventure promotion. Each action figure came with a hidden artifact that included a small sticker. Collecting 6 of these stickers, and sending in $6.99 would guarantee you an exclusive action figure based on a pretty important item from the new Indiana Jones flick: The Crystal Skeleton!

In order to avoid spoiling the movie, pictures of the Crystal Skeleton figure did not surface until after the movie was released in theaters. And now, just in time for the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on DVD (CLICK HERE for your chance to win a copy!), the exclusive artifact has begun showing up in the mailboxes of collectors.

The first thing to look at is the shipping box. This is exactly what you saw sitting in your mailbox when this figure arrived! It’s shaped and designed to look like a wooden crate that we’ve seen artifacts such as the Lost Ark get stored away in the films. This is such a cool touch, and immediately gives you the feeling that something special is inside.

After cutting the tape on the box and opening the flaps, you pull out a plastic insert that snuggly houses both the Crystal Skeleton action figure and the golden throne that the figure sits in. Let’s start by taking a look at that throne...

This is such an awesome accessory. It’s painted with a very nice golden tone that looks as if it has been sitting locked away in a tomb for thousands of years. The details are amazing, with wonderful carvings and designs working all the way around the throne. This isn’t even the main piece, but it’s so cool on its own that I was happy just after looking it over!

But, let’s get on to the real star of this set: The Crystal Skeleton. The figure is made of a translucent plastic that has a bit of a blue tint to it. Sometimes he appears perfectly clear, but under the proper lighting, he looks blue, which makes him almost appear to glow.

The figure is very thin, and I was worried he would be a tad fragile because of this. While he obviously isn’t as sturdy as figures with thicker limbs are, I’m happy to say that this figure is not overly fragile, meaning that I don’t feel like I’m going to break him just by bending his joints. He is actually is full of articulation, with ball joints in his knees, elbows, thighs, and shoulders. And, even with his slender build, he stands up just fine on his own.

While standing, he reaches about 5 inches tall, which is over an inch taller than the basic Indy figures. He’s big, but that does seem to be the proper scale of the figure. The figures many joints allow him to perfectly sit in his throne, which is how he, and the other Crystal Skeletons, appeared in the film. Once you have him sitting, he just seems complete. He looks great, especially when sitting alongside the other figures in your Indiana Jones collection.

I’ve always enjoyed exclusive mail-away promotions. It’s been a long time since I have taken part in one, but I am certainly glad I took the time to do this one! The Crystal Skeleton figure is a great addition to my collection, and if you’re an Indy fan, it’ll be a great addition to yours as well.
