As San Diego Comic-Con grows larger each year, major studios have begun looking for alternatives to being inside the crowded convention. The Walt Disney Studios have always been ahead of the curve, having space rented out in the city and giving fans a treasure hunt to win prizes. This worked wonders for fan loyalty on Tron: Legacy with their awesome Flynnís Arcade experience two years in a row and a fun Twitter campaign lead to a secret location of a Tim Burtonís Alice in Wonderland props and costumes exhibit. For Tim Burtonís upcoming stop motion animated feature Frankenweenie (an animated remake of his live-action short), Disney opted for having a presence both inside the convention floors AND out.
For the busy exhibition floor within the San Diego Convention Center, Disney's Frankenweenie: The Art of Exhibition gave attendees a very close-up look at the actual sets, puppets, concept art and props from the film. Tim Burtonís desk was also on display, allowing fans to get a sense of how this man works.
Eagle eyed on-lookers might notice that some of the props on the sets are in color. The reason for this is because some items need to show more detail on film so they were made in color but digitally desaturated in post production. On the outside of the convention floor not too far away was the HGTV Electrifying Garden that took guests inside the fictional town of New Hollandís Pet Cemetary. The tent featured some monstrous plants (many real) and a walk through the animated cemetery where a trailer is played Frankenweenie was played on a loop. It was an amazing photo opportunity to have your picture taken inside the world of New Holland. While it may not seem like much, attendees did receive a souvenir pin as they exited and also a chance to win one of 25 t-shirts a day.
San Diego Comic-Con is really all about what you put into it and Disneyís Frankenweenie exhibits really did help build awareness and anticipation for the film, which is scheduled for release in theaters October 5th.
