NECA: Epic Scale Aragorn

This review looks at Neca's Reel Toys Epic Scale Aragorn. One of the first figures from the Lord of the Rings line (Legolas is the other). This Epic Scale Aragorn is both large and impressive. A very nice (and affordable) alternative for collector's who desire highly detailed pieces a la Sideshow Weta. The Lord of the Rings Epic Line is available at retailers like: Media Play, Spencer Gifts and the like. As well as many online retailers.

Packaging

Very large. My jaw dropped when I first saw how big the figure was and the package it came in. The box is 20" tall, 12" wide and 9" deep front to back. The packaging has a plastic window to see the figure and it's accessories. The box features pictures of the figure itself, rather then pictures of Aragorn from the movies. On the inside of the box, it features a map of middle earth. The back of the box has pictures of all the weapons and items Aragorn comes with. As well as a picture of the Legolas figure which is available. There are plenty of twist ties, tying Aragorn down to keep you busy, so be prepared for that.

Sculpt and Paint

Amazing. Honestly, the likeness on this piece is the best I have seen yet. Detail? Plenty. Right to the ring of Barahir, to the Evenstar pendant. He also has Boromir's Gondorian Gauntlets, which is way cool. His cloak is not removable, but very nice. At 18" tall head to toe and over 20" with his arms raised holding his torch. This is a very big figure and very impressive.

The paint on Aragorn is near perfect. His cloak has mud stains on the bottom on it. That's attention to detail. His hands are rough and rugged as they should be for a Ranger from the North. His face is what you really notice. His blue eys are exact. His beard stubble is sculpted rather then painted, and that works very well. Overall, the paint job on this piece is second to none.

Articulation

You can pose Aragorn in many ways. My favorite pose is of him holding his torch and pulling his ranger sword from it's sheath. Articulation includes:

Electronics

The Aragorn is also Motion-Activated Sound enhanced. So, in other words when there is movement in front of him he speaks. There is a motion sensor right above his belt, very small, but, that's where it is. He has an on/off button on his back. To be honest the Motion sensor is very sensitive, and probably my only gripe on this piece. The phrases he speaks are Viggo's voice and taken right from the movies, they are:

"If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword."
"It is an army bred for a single purpose: To destroy the world of men."
"I am Aragorn, son of Arathorn."
"We travel light. Let us hunt some orc."

Overall

Without a doubt the best Aragorn available. Thou very big and out of scale to probably most other stuff in your Lord of the Rings collection. the good news is that Legolas is currently available (which is also a great piece) and a Gandalf the Grey planned to be released next. Following that is the mighty Balrog and a rumored Ringwraith and hopefully more to come after that. So, your Aragorn won't be lonely for long.

This piece is one of my favorites in my Lord of the Rings collection. It retails for $39.99 and to be honest you really can't go wrong for that price. Collector's who love action figures or love very detailed pieces alike will really enjoy this piece. At an affordable price, pick yourself up Neca's Epic Scale Aragorn. You will not be disappointed.
