The Ben 10 "Battle Version" series continues to update and revamp classic characters and aliens with cool new features including re-sculpts, translucent parts, increased articulation, and new accessories. After several series of Omnitrix heroic aliens, Bandai has finally gotten around to another figure of Vilgax, the most fearsome Ben 10 villain.

Vilgax comes to you in the standard Ben 10 Alien Collection bubble on card packaging. Targeted to kids, the card is bright and colorful, primarily in green and yellow Omnitrix styling. Ben 10 logos are prominent. The bubble is rounded and textured with spherical protrusions. The figure is clearly visible in the center, above an insert with the character's name.

The back of the card shows all of the other figures in the Ben 10 Alien Collection "Battle Version" line. Interestingly, Vilgax and the other brand new figures have new stickers on the back of their cards that show the packages' contents in diagram form. Maybe kids were losing small accessories they didn't even know were there?

Vilgax is a classic science fiction bad guy. Commanding a massive battleship and hordes of minions, he will stop at nothing to eliminate Ben Tennyson and acquire the Omnitrix. He almost captured it on its way to Earth, but was grievously injured by the device's escape pod. In turn, Vilgax spent most of the first season in a bacta tank-like healing pod. Before he went in Vilgax was... on the scrawny side, and that look was captured perfectly in the first Vilgax figure. When he came out though, he was something new.

This figure could very well be called "Super Vilgax." He is huge, with positively scary arms. Big Vilgax is humanoid, barely, with thin legs, a large upper body, and massively muscled arms that reach almost to the ground. Vilgax's head is monstrous, with a bald pate, hoses and mask covering his mouth, and a set of tentacles emerging from his lower face and overflowing his chest.

The sculpt on this figure is very nice. There are lots of sculpted details on Vilgax's body armor, and the arms are literally rippling with sinewy muscles. The shoulders are covered in armored plates, and each side has a large protruding piece. Vilgax's head is also very detailed, with textured tentacles and headband. Colors on this figure are muted, mostly because the majority is comprised of clear translucent plastic. Vilgax's legs and central body are brown, his head translucent yellowish green, and arms clear translucent.

Sadly, with all of the cool features of this new figure there had to be a drawback. In this case, it's articulation. Vilgax has a dismal four (yes, four) points of articulation: shoulders and hips. [Note: there is aneck joint, but it's almost completely hindered.] This is really pathetic, and frustrating on such an otherwise awesome toy. The lack of knees is baffling. And while I can see how elbows would have been a major undertaking, they would've been really cool.

Vilgax has no accessories (not that he really needs any), but does come with the standard "Battle Version" base and bio card/backdrop. The base is flat gray and textured like the rocky surface of the Null Void. Vilgax's bio describes his emergence from the Null Void several centuries ago, and his "battle cruiser." The backdrop side depicts the cavernous floating rocks of the Void. When inserted into the base, the code on the bio for use on the Bandai Ben 10 site reads AKEC.

The new Vilgax looks great. He's mean and he's huge. Unfortunately, the figure has it's share of drawbacks. The translucent parts are nice, but somewhat unnecessary, especially since it obscures so many sculpted details. The lack of accessories is okay, but that of articulation is not. Even in this very toy line there have been clear figures with articulation (Ben Tennyson from the Vilgax Battle Ship comes to mind), so why not Vilgax? In short, this figure is a good addition to a Ben 10 collection, but other collectors should weigh its pros and cons carefully.
