REVIEW: How the Grinch Stole Christmas MT. CRUMPIT Box Set

McFarlane rings in the cartoon classic...

McFarlane's How the Grinch Stole Christmas figures are available at many fine retailers, including CornerStoreComics.com, BigBadToyStore.com, ToyWiz.com, ToyRocket.com, StatueToys.com, and WhiteWizardToys.com.

One of the world’s most beloved Christmas tales -- How the Grinch Stole Christmas -- is brought to life thanks to the toy wizards at McFarlane Toys. The Mount Crumpit Box Set is what we have up for review today. With the exception of the small size of the Grinch and Max, this piece is a wonderful addition to any Christmas village.

PACKAGING: This box set comes in exactly that -- in a stylish box. The front has a MIB collectors dream with a nice plastic window to show off the Grinch and Mt. Crumpit. The back also gives a wonderful view of the other figures in this line.

SCULPT: The sculpters at McFarlane have truly outdone themselves with this set. They have captured the feel of Dr. Seuss' classic TV movie perfectly in six inch scale. They decided to do the vintage-style sharp angles in which the 60s cartoon is renown for. The amount of detail they put into this sculpt is not over or under done, it's just right.

SIZE: Although the creative geniuses at McFarlane did an outstanding job of designing this piece, they came up just short on the size. The entire set stands roughly 7½ inches tall (when sleigh is tipped, that measurement is 8¼ inches at highest point). The Grinch figure measures approximately 1 1/8 inches tall; Max is approximately 7/8 inches long. Base is 8 inches wide, 3¾ inches deep. Personally I think they could have done it a little taller. That way Grinch and Max, whom should be the main focal point, could have been taller.

DETAIL: I touched on the detail a little while ago, but now I am going to give you my full opinion on this piece. McFarlane is known for the amazing amount of detail they add into each and every one of their figures and the Mt. Crumpit set is no different. From the texture of the snow that lines the side of the mountain to the angles on the Christmas trees stolen. They once again show why McFarlane is the leader of the industry.

As you look at this set from the front, the first thing you will notice is the Grinch. All dressed up in his Santa garb with a wickedly evil smile on his face. Standing on top of a little ledge, Grinch is a remarkable piece full of additional detail. You can literally count the lines etched across his face. Then there is his faithful companion Max, who is seen dangling from a thin rope directly behind the Grinch. His single antler in all of its glory actually looks exactly like the television show. Which if you don’t remember was a stick broken into pieces. The only drawback on Max is his very small size.

Atop of this Mt. Crumpit sits the famous sleigh dangling precariously. Whats wonderful about the sleigh is the action they chose to give it. You can tilt it to give the illusion it is about to fall uncontrablly down the mountain. On top of the sleigh is the bag of stolen Christmas items. A couple of wreaths are attached carefully to the outside of the bag. Sticking out of the bag is some well crafted trees and presents. Holding it all down to the sleigh is some rope. You can actually count and feel the threads in the rope, that is how indepth they sculpted this set.

PAINT: The artists at McFarlane Toys have once again shown their expertise at painting. The main color scheme for the Crumpit box set is done in a very cartoonish blue and white. Normally I wouldn’t say too much nice about this scheme, but they pulled it off.

The mountain is mostly light blue with white repreasenting the snow. Black is the color they chose for the rocks. There is no paint bleed anywhere on this piece, which is nice. And with it being a mini-staute, like McFarlane is known to produce, there is no chances of paint rub.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Overall I highly recommend this piece for any collector. Whether it be kept in the stylish box or proudly displayed in a Christmas village under your tree, the Mt. Crumpit boxset is a fine piece of workmanship and a great addition to any holiday setting.
